I'm PCSing to WRNMMC in October.  I won't be able to park there (not that I really relished the idea of driving during rush hour in that area anyway) so I'll need to live within reasonable distance of the Red Line, probably north of Medical Center.  Any specific recommendations on areas to zero in on or avoid during our house hunt?  (looking ideally for a 2 or 3 BR in the $2000-2300 or so/month price range, dog friendly)  TIA!

Hi! This is a higher priced area unfortunately! But I really do love Kensington. You'd still probably need a car, but metro is a 5 min drive away. The best metro options are North Bethesda (by Tuckerman) or even up by downtown Rockville. It is though kind of difficult to be without a car unless you live in Bethesda, really. You can get around on your bike on the Crescent trail

Thanks!

Yeah, the very high cost of living in that area is a pain, but since I'm originally from the northeast (NJ), I'm used to it.  We know we're going to have to downsize quite a bit from our 1900 sq ft 3/2/2 house in TX and still pay nearly twice as much in rent.  Luckily it's just my husband and me and our 2 dogs (and 4 bikes, 2 snowboards, etc.).  We will have our cars, I just won't be able to drive to work.

If you can translate PCSing & WRNMMC maybe I can advise - no idea what you're talking about!

Sorry! Military speak. PCS= permanent change of station ("move" in English, as the thread subject suggests). WRNMMC = Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda.

What do you consider dog friendly? Are you looking for a backyard or is walkability to the metro more important? For metro access, I'd check the area near the Grosvenor-Strathmore metro. The apartments there are pet friendly and the location is awesome. Very short walk to the red line. I also noticed some townhouses/condos in that area as well. If you're looking for a backyard, maybe a house in Kensington, Rockville, or even Bethesda. I would avoid the areas around the white flint and twinbrook metros.

Thanks!  All good advice.

By "dog friendly" really I just mean accepts dogs.  A fenced yard would be ideal, mostly for our larger, younger dog, but we're willing to consider forgoing that if it's the right location otherwise.  We're actually traveling up to the area this weekend to look at places, and so far have 2 houses in Kensington lined up (plus 2 in Silver Spring, which obviously isn't ideal for me commute-wise, but otherwise seem like good options).  Plus I talked to a guy about a townhouse in King Farm, near the Shady Grove metro, that also might work (just rather small and w/o any outdoor space, though as I understand it, it's a very walkable area and there's a dog park nearby).

There have been a lot of new apartment/condos open up on the Red Line near Grosvenor, White Flint, Twinbrook ande Rockville stations. Im not familiar with their pet policies but they are worth a look.

If you are looking for a house to rent, looking near Rockville or Twinbrook metro stations would probably be your best bet as far as affordability is concerned. The closer you get to Bethesda, the prices really start to get up there.
