would you...

Go for the run outdoors, even if the heat/humidity feels like 95+, knowing it will be a horrible showing for yourself, and you might even need to stop a few times...

or

Do the run at the Gym, crank up the treadmill to an aggressive pace, and enjoy the cool temp and the ipod?

I wish it felt like 95 outside.  I'd have to grab my stocking cap and gloves.  Suck it up buttercup and enjoy the outdoors.

Yeah...Sometimes I have to wait indoors until it feel 95 outside. As soon as it gets that cool, I'm out the door!

There's nothing wrong with running on a treadmill.  Depends what you want out of the training.  If the 'quality' of the running is more important than heat acclimation, then the treadmill may be the better choice.  That said, I've yet to use the treadmill due to heat and have run in heat indicies well over 100.  But it requires me to slow down and/or shorten the run unless I really want to tax my system.

It's pretty much always hot and humid here (although we're not in a "cold" front) in the summer. Gotta love living in the valley! I suck it up and head outside. I just go out as early as I can to help myself out some.

I try my darndest to get outdoors. But sometimes it just ain't gonna happen.
Last weekend I was optomistic for my 13 mile run... did 8 outdoors before I gave up. I felt horrible with a headache and getting dizzy from the heat. Couldn't get enough water in me. So I did the last 5 indoors on the treadmill and it was an awesome 5 miles. I was glad I took it inside as I felt the quality was much better than suffering needlessly outdoors. Plus I got to watch some olympics Cool

I have, and would. I'd get up early though, and go before the sun gets too high.

I'll go to the treadmill more often than not when conditions get more extreme, until it gets to the point that I'll need the heat acclimation for a race.

If I've got a race coming up that could be in those types of conditions, I'll try to get a few runs in with the heat.  If not, then I try to get up early enough in the morning where it's only 90 degrees

I'll only use a treadmill if I dont have good enough footing to run outside - such as when its snowy or icy.

Yep. Put on your big boy pants and go outside.

If it is hot/humid, try night running, or going early morning. I would try avoiding the heat before forcing myself to get on the hamster wheel.

I try not to run more than 5 or 6 miles in really hot and humid conditions, but I do get out there. I've been out when the heat index is 100 - 105, which, to a Vermonter, is torture. But my race might be under those conditions, so I do it anyway. Also, like many a Vermonter, we don't have a/c going, and nothing makes your house feel blissfully cool than coming in from a hot and sweaty run.

I wear light colors, the lightest running shorts I own, a white hat to help cool my raven haired head, and make sure I hydrate well.

When it comes to biking, it doesn't seem so bad until I stop, although sometimes it does feel like I'm being cooked on the pavement.

Get out there!

Yes, as a matter of fact, I've waited today until the temp. hit 94 and am heading out for an hour run in about 10 min.  I LOVE the heat.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I can tell you that here in MI after the heat index was well over 100 for almost two weeks, running on a 95 degree low humidity day didn't even feel the least bit hot to me until about mile 5.  So there's something to be said for acclimation.  If you plan to race soon in a potentially hot/humid environment, that should factor into your equation.

I can also tell you that I ran my first half mary which was an early spring event by training all winter on the tread and raced at an 8 minute pace which isn't too shabby for my first attempt, having done only one run outside prior to the race.

Agree with Lisa.  There is something to be gained by acclimating, etc... But on the other hand, if your quality and health are going to suffer, there is no shame in coming indoors for some of the training.  I've been having a tough go of it with the heat, but dealing with it by doing some split workouts (part indoors, part out) to get the road time in but also keep up the quality of the training.

This irritates me (a lot of the comments, not the OP's question) Running inside when it's hot out (whatever HOT means to you) doesn't make you a pansy. Sometimes it's a smart decision, especially if you aren't acclimated to the heat.

OP: if you are going to miserable when it's 95+, run inside. It's okay. Really.

And 95 without humidity is a lot "cooler" than 95 with humidity, so there's that. correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Arizona normally pretty dry?

I am in HOuston and agree with these guys. I was just in Phoenix last week and it felt breezy just because it was less humid than what I am used to. Won't find me running during one of those Haboob things though, that was pretty freaky!

Seriously??

Lighten up...we're just messing around. Do you get "irritated" when people type HTFU, too??

For AZ, it's actually been kind of humid with all the monsoons...high 70's low 80%'s. Much worse than a high heat alone, I completely agree.  Besides, he didn't say it was 95 + humidity. He said it felt like 95 with the humidity...So get out there and run, "pansy".

I'm with Trishie...some of the bravado in the thread is comical.

If it comes down to having a good workout indoors or a crappy one out of doors, by all means jump on the treadmill, don't worry about the tough guys trying to shame you.

If you're trying to acclimate for a race that might be contested in hot weather...by all means you should try to get outside.  But other than that, go wherever you're going to get the best work in.

Easy Trishie, as already said I think most the "suck it up" comments are in jest.  No need to go Bryan on this  (oops, missing the red but that's jest too).  But for what it's worth there is no heat that could drive me inside to a treadmill, just not worth it IMO.  If I'm doing a run off the bike lately it's around 95-100 already and now that it's monsoon season we see upwards of 80% humidity.  Hydrate and slow down a bit if need be.  But at the end of the day if you think it's too hot or too cold or too rainy or too windy or too sunny or too cloudy then I suppose, if you can handle it, you can hop on the treadmill/trainer.  Just keep in mind races don't happen solely on 55 degree sunny and calm days.

Well your since your sig line says "hills build character" get outside! Besides when it is 90 degree and 90% humidity no one else is outside to see you if you decide to stop.
