Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 34-39
Age Group Rank = 42/79
Pre-race routine:

I woke early, around 4:30, but stayed in bed till 4:45. After my early morning self picture, I put bike on car and bag inside. I drank some Gatorade and water.I ate a toasted bagel with peanut butter for the short drive.
Event warmup:

After getting body marked and transition area set up, I jogged around for about 10 mins, then swam for another 10 mins. The porta cans line were very long, so I swam out and peed in the water.
Swim
  • 19m 4s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was able to bilaterally breathe during this race. I felt strong and confident in the water. I was kicked one time pretty hard in the chest the was a shock but not detrimental to my race. I was also kicked or handed in the face that pulled my goggles off, but I was able to get them right back on, again not detrimental to the race but both slowed me down just a little. The whole swim, I was trying to get around one guy, but we swam the same pace. Either he was in front of me or I was in front of him, but mostly we were just trying to stop running into each other. Toward the end of the swim, I had to pee again, so I swam to the right a bit and went. I did manage to swim past him at the end. I was 7 seconds slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

I really should learn to swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

I had a fast for me T1. I found my area without any trouble. The transition was in a grassy area that was freshly mowed, so I had grass clipping all over my feet, I did not bother trying to clean them, just put on socks and shoes and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

I might try to go sock-less, bet I could save 30 sec.
Bike
  • 28m 8s
  • 11 miles
  • 23.46 mile/hr
Comments:

I got up to speed very fast and stayed there. there were allot of people on the course. I was constantly saying "passing left". Only once did anther rider get close to me, he was drinking from a water bottle and drifted to the left as I passed, a stern "hold your line" and he was back on track.I stayed in the 25-27 mph range for most of the race. I stayed in my aero bars for all the ride minus the turn around and the last 1/4 mile or so. There were 3 turn around in all that I had to slow for. I was only passed one time by a guy on a way cool Geffin with a disk, oh and also by some one on a new QR Caliente, but I passed him back and stayed in front of him the rest of the time. I am really starting to enjoy this bike. This was my best in a race, so far!!!
What would you do differently?:

I still want to learn to have my shoes on the bike and do a running/jumping mount/dismount. The coolness factor is high on this one. Other than that I think my cycling is not too bad.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

This was a good T2 for me. I ran down the wrong row, but quickly found my spot. I did not drink any of the water or Gatorade I set out.
What would you do differently?:

I need to buy a helium balloon to put on my rack, so I can find my area.
Run
  • 25m 44s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I remember this run from last year, so it felt good to me. As usual, I passed a few and was passed by many. I skipped all of the water stops. I felt pretty good the whole time. My run felt strong and comfortable. The only problem I had was I had to pee from before the 1 mile mark. I sprinted the last 150 yards to the finish. One of the coolest things about this race is an announcer calls out your name "Here comes Joe Lechnar from Katy"
What would you do differently?:

The only thing I would do differently is push just a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

As soon as I crossed the finish line, I went to a portacan.....whew.
Bonnie Zachery and Rocky Dawg were all there to greet me, as well as Rob, Chris (CGOMEZ), Robert (JAG).
I got a water and a Gatorade, a few strawberry newtons--YUM.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The only limiting factor in this and any race was me.

Event comments:

I really like this race, I did it last year and enjoyed it today too.
My time last year was 1hr 30 mins, this year 1hr 15 mins!!!!

Yes a 15 min difference!!!!

Maybe all this training is paying off!!!!

Way to go Joe!!!  What an excellent race...congrats!!!!  They guys are rough on the swim, huh?  I can't believe your goggles were knocked OFF!  Your cycling time (and speeds) were FAST!  And, what a nice run!  (glad nature allowed you to finish! LOL)

I missed Chris!?!  I haven't met him yet.  Where was he?

(FYI - I think there was TMI in your report about peeing! LOL)

Great job! Wow what a BIKE RIDE! That speed is phenomenal.

Yeah, all the training is definitely paying off... I never told you this, but... remember my friend Bill from the marathon party? Well when I showed him the pic of us training at the park he asked who you were. When I reminded him that he'd met you, he said, "at first I thought that might be him but then I thought, 'nah, that guy's too skinny'..." So, check it out, slimmer and faster BOTH!

Fifteen minutes. INcredible.
