Subject: Q for ladies: chafing from bra
Help! Yesterday I did a race rehearsal type workout. Swam 2 miles ows in my tri gear and then ran 17 right after. I had massive chafing 9 miles in under my arm on my side from my bra. It started as a small spot, but when I finished, I had matching ones on each side, a circle about 3 inches in diameter!Yes I used body glide. Now with 3 weeks I'm stuck. I don't mind afterwards having chafing (the post IM shower is always brutal) but to endure the pain for 17 miles, I'm afraid I may get a hole in my side! Any ideas? Could I put trainer tape on pre race to help? It's the only spot that's bad, which is pretty awesome in terms of chafing, and I'd really like to go with it.Thanks!

this works better than bodyglide IMHO  http://skinstrong.com/   But those sound super nasty.  May need to rethink your attire plan.  I had a top that gave me troubles and switched to one that had bigger arm holes and that solved that issue.  Nothing seems go help with the one I get around the bottom band though.  I think I've developed a callous there at this point.

I would say get a new bra personally.  But I suppose you don't really have time to test it out.  I am sure the body glide would have worn off by the end of your run but they will have Vaseline out on the course so you could reapply something.  Tape might work but if you put it where you chaffed and that rubs on anything exposed skin then you are likely to get chaffed there as well.  Athlete tape can be pretty abrasive itself.  I'd be more likely to go the duck tape method if I was desperate as you can get some that are smooth

That's the problem, I've gone through four bra combos and this one gave me the least problems. I think swimming first might have caused the issue? Ive done 2 15 milers and a 16.5 miler without any issues prior to this.

IronMan race? If so, swim in a normal swimsuit. Spend the extra 2 minutes in the changing tent and put the Bra/TriSuit on after the swim. I will waste 2 minutes in transition over spending 4 hours rubbing the skin off my sides any day.

I have yet to find a combination (bra/top) that doesn't chafe. I currently put aquaphor on post bike/pre-run (I have a little tube in my shoe in transition so I remember)...I sweat Body Glide right off in about 15 minutes - but Aquaphor seems to last a little better.

Good luck - I hope you find some relief! (I can't tell you how many post race pictures there are of me with my arms held out from my sides because the thought of putting them down makes me want to cry).

(Edited to fix poor grammar)

Instead of applying the body glide to you, what about applying the body glide directly to your sports bra? I do that with a pair of shoes and one particular sports bra that gives me trouble and I think it works much better.

I'd use tape of some sort - probably white medical tape applied in transition. If Body Glide (or other lubes) aren't working I'm not sure what other choice you have at this point.

x2 on the Aquaphor.  It has worked for me when Body Glide failed.  Be generous with it!

I tried swim/run with training tape once and it actually made the chafing worse.

I am big fan of Aquaphor in just about every location.  I have also used this stick of rub on wax directly applied to the seam or area of the bra that rubs.  I have a stick of this unscented wax that I got at the hobby store.  It is plain colored and cost like .30.  I don't really know what it is, but I have rubbed it on seams or even areas of clothes where I have removed tags and the little scratchy part still bugs me.  I have not had any problem with it in the wash and one application usually lasts for several wearings.

I've always used aquaphor after I will try it before! I did put a rush order on 3 more bras, but I don't have a real choice with the tri top, it's a team issued LG top. Besides the issues are under the bra. The bra incidentally is the Shock Absorber. It really has been fantastic in all my 95 degree/high humidity long runs.I will also look for that wax! Can't wait till that convo at Michaels when they ask if they can help me...

Hey, Amy.  I too used Aquphor like crazy.  I don't remember now, but I feel like I tried a "second skin" product once (like tape) and it didn't go well, but for the life of me, I can't remember what happened.

Lots and lots of aquaphor and vaseline...

But this is one of the reasons I wear shirts with sleeves....without sleeves I always tend to get chafe marks on my arms....
