Pre-race routine:

We had checked in bikes on Saturday even though we could have checked them Sunday morning
Took the shuttle from FRA downtown around 7:15, which brought us to Langener Waldsee around 7:40
Had enough time to set up the bikes with shoes and helmets, then we spent lots of time at the beach watching the Olympic waves... my wave was 9:50, Andreas wave was 10:05
This was the first time I was wearing my new club suit, awesome:-)

Event warmup:

Took a dip in the lake, water was nice

I lined up on the front inner side, hoping that I had not lost my swim mojo:-)

Swim
  • 07m 40s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

very short swim, never got into a rhythm
I felt like there was a larger group in fron of me, I must have either passed them or was simply wrong, I exited about position 7 to 10 of my wave

Used 2 stroke breathing more than 50% of the time, was pretty stressful, I slowed down a bit towards the end, had started a bit too aggressive

THere must have been one guy drafting me, he swam over my legs several times, that sucked
What would you do differently?:

not too much, maybe start a bit slower, but then I would have been in a bigger bunch
Transition 1
  • 04m 36s
Comments:

included a long run from swim exit to bikes, my bike was nearly at the exit of the bike corral
Decided to place the shoes at the bike so I ran barefoot, but did NOT put the shoes on the bike because I did not feel comfortable without training
What would you do differently?:

use towel to clean feet before putting on shoes
Bike
  • 23m 48s
  • 12.5 kms
  • 31.51 km/hr
Comments:

that was the worst part of the race

I got passed by a lot of people, I passed a few but mostly slower Oly guys

I went around 30-33 most of the time and was frustrated that I was not able to push more, given the short distance
What would you do differently?:

definitely the weak spot, will have to step up my bike training, potentially spinning
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

went well, picked up my bag from the rack, helmet off
shoes went on not so well because feet were wet, should have used powder
What would you do differently?:

powder for shoes
Run
  • 23m 46s
  • 4.8 kms
  • 04m 57s  min/km
Comments:

This was a very positive surprise, was not sure what would happen, would not have been surprised if I had blown up here

Was able to run around 5min pace
both knees were holding up:-)

Of course good to know that it would be over soon:-)
What would you do differently?:

just a bit more focus on running, biking is more important...
Post race
Warm down:

met some of the Funball friends, got some water, cake
then walked back the course to cheer on Andrea. She came several minutes earlier than I expected, she managed 1:08, which is awesome!
I ran a bit alongside her, then finally met her in the finishing chute

we tried to get our gear bags but there was huge confusion, so we went home to take shower. Picked up bikes and bags much later

What limited your ability to perform faster:

definitely the bike performance!

Was very positively surprised by the run, the swim was also good

Event comments:

It was good to re-register for the mini sprint, would have folded on the oly distance

it was real fun and Andrea caught the bug as well, we are already planning the next sprint race
