Many years ago I was doing a 5k but wasn't in race shape yet. I was kinda bummed because the 50+ lady dressed in all leopard skin with full make up on passed me a long time ago. I heard the un mistakable sound of someone huffing and puffing with some horrible gait pattern coming up behind me. As he passed, I read the back of his shirt " you've just been passed by Grandpa Dave". My competitive side kicked in and said " oh hell no" and I had to pick it up a notch. Luckily it wasn't at the finish because I would have been embarrassed to out kick a 75 y/o at the end. But I would have! No offense to Grandpa Dave but my ego couldn't have handeled it. I ended up placing 3 in my age group thanks to the kick in the pants Dave gave me. He of course won his age group! Point is. Doesn't matter who or when u pass. The clock is the thing to beat.

Isn't there a motivational poster that says "Somewhere someone is training right now, and when you meet them in a race - they will beat you".

Far as I can tell - you were the one who trained harder.

I always pick it up the last bit of the race - whether I pass someone or not.

Another 'you did nothing wrong'

And I'll add two things I find funny -

People who are sprinting against each other at the finish when they clearly started in different waves.

And people who run at a very modest pace yet somehow cover the last couple hundred feet at an all out sprint.

Why do you find them funny?

I am a BOP racer. I need to find my inspiration to push myself where I can. If that means it is someone from another wave at the end of a race, then that's what it is. I will happily take the "race in my head" where I pass someone not in my wave if it means I am pushing myself a little harder, and gaining 30 seconds on my overall race time. It lets me know I can reach deep and pull some more out. And I hope the person I am passing is doing the same - reaching a little harder to keep me behind them, or at least reel me in.

And again, as a BOP racer and runner, what you consider a "modest pace" may be the best I can do to sustain my energy through the race. That last 0.1-0.2 miles is where I know I can pour out my heart and run as fast as I can. I've have been in races where that meant my last bit of race was up to 25-30% faster than my average pace throughout the race. And then, with my HR maxed out, I essentially collapse after getting through the chute. The sight of the finish line is more motivating to me to find that last gear than the middle of the race, where there are no spectators, no cheers, I have seen the FOP passing me some time ago, and there are many fewer racers behind me to get me to kick it out.

If only the "don't push or cut people off" extended to the swim.  Realistically it can't, but just saying.  I'm still recovering from a kick to the neck 30 days ago.

What I don't get is how you got different answers on a running forum. How is they came up with something different that 100% of the posters here?

blbriley - 2012-08-07 7:46 PM I think Kris Gemmell wanted to cry after this!

That's what he gets for being over 30 and wearing a backwards hat

It's a race from start to finish line... you should be respectful and safe, but race hard. You did the right thing. She took advantage of your weakness (the hill) and you took advantage of her weakness (the pace). I, and I'm certain, many more would do the same thing. If you didn't run pass her and she podium'd and you got 4th, wouldn't you wish that you pushed that extra for those few 100 yards? I certainly would.

I'm baffled as to how the responses on other forums could be any different. It's a race, so RACE! Great job on your finish, I think a sprint to the finish sounds exhilarating - if I've got ANYTHING left in the tank at the end of my first tri, I'm going to try to do the same thing!

At any point in the race I try to look for motivation to push harder.  On a sprint I did this summer it was someone who passed me on the bike, I wasn't going to let them beat me and I think we both had the same idea.  Years ago, when I did alot of 5 K's I allways sprinted at the end.  In a week all your going to see is the time.  I would be pissed at myself if I just missed out on a PR that was with in reach.

smoom - 2012-08-07 8:00 AM Some of my funnest moments in races have been all out sprints to the finish line with strangers.  In every case, whether I was the first one across or not, we laughed and high fived on the other side of the line.  Just last race a guy from my age group was trying to catch me from behind.  I gave it all I had and beat him to the finish line.  We ate pizza and chatted for the next 45 minutes.

Ditto this post^^^.

i hung behind a guy for the whole 5k of a sprint, with a couple hundred yards left i gave all i had to try and pass him.  i didnt make it but i sure had fun trying and started to laugh crossing the finish line. other races, the same thing. i try to pass who i can, when i can, and everyone seems to have a good time. in the same token, i've also been passed approaching the finish line as well.

I've missed spots by a few seconds, I  don't feel bad by sprinting anywhere.  It is a RACE.

I don't care who you are, how hard you are working, or how bad you're struggling, in a Tri, if i can you and you I don't go for it, I'm pissed at myself. If you did any sports at any level you were taught to always finish strong. Why stop now?

It's a race and pass everyone you can.

Only time I get worked up about being passed at the end was when the guy nearly shoved my into the wall so he could pass.  I thought he would get penalized but the officials didn't seem too worried about it.  His "hey its a race and I want to win" was responded with "Except my wave started two minutes after yours, I still win by 1:59".  His response can't be mentioned here.

Not rude, it is a race and you did the right thing.  Go hard at the end.  I kinda have a good finishing chute story.  I passed a guy in the last few feet of the line.  He didn't even know I was coming.  We shook hands and chatted about a minute and went on our way.  I set my PB 10k record that day.  About two months later I raced a 1/2 marathon in the next town over.  At the finish line the same guy returned the favor to me.  Karma came back at me.  After the race we shot the bull for an hour while eating the post race food.  No hard feelings and it should be fun, even when you get beat.  That is just motivation to train harder.
