Pre-race routine:

Einstein's Power Bagel with PB, banana, water for breakfast at 5:15am. Drove 1 hour to race site. At 1/2 Luna bar, 16 oz water.
Event warmup:

Ran 1 mile, stretched for 10 minutes.

Comments:

Good swim. I had Mr. Age-Group winner/Adonnis and Mr. Ironman Coeur D'Lane in my lane. Both very nice and very hot guys. We all swam about the same pace. I miscounted and thought I still had a 50 to go, so I never kicked in my end sprint before it was time to get out. Swim felt awesome and flip turns were fantastic.
What would you do differently?:

Count better! Swim the last 100 at 100%
Transition 1

Comments:

I had this down to a science. I didn't take anytime to dry off, just my feet to slip into my socks. Only thing that was a bit of a hitch was stuffing my gel in to my wet back pocket.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...this went perfect

I did almost get hit by a car when the cop didn't see me coming up behind the line of cars and directed a lady to turn right just in front of me. I swerved way to the right and she missed me, but had it been 1 second later, I would have slammed into the side of the car. The cop apologized, saying he didn't see me.

They also had the course designated by a row of cones on the right that we were supposed to ride to the right of. It was a pretty narrow space and once when we came to an intersection with a long line of cars, the space was filled with 3 very large riders on mountain bikes. I just started screaming like a mad-woman "on your left" as I zoomed by, outside the cones, about 10" from the cars. At least the cop saw me this time. I wasn't about to hit the brakes and slow from 21mph to 12mph because they didn't leave enough room. However, I feel bad for screaming like a crazy bitch at the beginners.
What would you do differently?:

Hammer up the first hill.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

This went really smooth again, however I was kicking myself because I couldn't find my Yanx last night, so I had to tie my shoes.
Run
  • 16m 30s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Thought I was running slow as heck. I was also all alone with nobody in sight ahead or behind. I finally saw a guy about 2/3 through and ran hard to catch and pass him. I always need a "rabbit" to get me moving. I also didn't have my watch or I would have pushed it harder to beat 1 hour. Although, I don't know if I could..this is my fastest mile times ever and I had a side stitch and a shoulder pain.

I have to say, I wrote Pearl's name, my friend's baby who just died, on my leg. It was really special knowing that I was racing for her. Several times I asked her to "give me wings and help me fly" and she did. I got choked up a few times thinking about it, but really wanted to do well to honor her.
What would you do differently?:

Do more sprint workouts.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, ran to go see hubby start bike portion. Water, banana, bagel, orange

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Could use more sprint workouts on the run.

I cut 10 minutes from my time last year on this race, most from the bike, some from transition and run. I was really pleased. I also placed in top ten in my age group, which is more than I ever dreamed of!

Course: 2 lap course. First 1/3 of the loop had a long uphill. All right turns. After the first hill, it was basically flat or downhill. I got in my aero's and hammered. I even cornered in the darn things, at about 17 mph. I felt fast and loved this ride. I really tried to keep it in the big chain ring and just go. I did have a hard time with the first giant hill out of transition..my HR was about 160 and it took the whole hill to get it back in control. I pretty much just spun up the hill the first time.

So, Miss Speedster, all this whining about being slow was just a ploy.  Either you are faster than you say or Pearl (angel font) carried you along with her angel wings.

I am glad you had a nice race.  Good job!

Nice race Melanie!!  You were smokin!  Top 10 in your age group is certainly nothing to sneeze at!   What other races are you doing this year?

Thanks all! I have to admit, I'm pretty pleased with this race. After this olympic, I might have to go back to doing sprints, cause I might have a chance of being competitive in them.  Next year, I am determined to place top 3 in this race.

As for the rest of the schedule:  I have Loveland Lake2Lake on the 24th, going to try to find a sprint in July, and then Steamboat Tri on August 27th. I'm planning on doing the Boulder Backroads 1/2 Mary if I can get up enough nerve.

And Chris...it must have been the eye-candy, because they were seriously hot!  (And my hubby doesn't even mind me saying that!
