I'll be volunteering on the bike route on Aug 19th at the Pink Power tri. Thinking about doing a pre-ride over at Shady Grove after the race.

Anyone want to meet up?

Then it like a great time to do a preride!

Good luck. Most important thing is to remember to have a good time and enjoy the experience.

I may just go ahead and drop a bike off at the Missus' place in Glen Allen this week. What time are you thinking of doing the Shady Grove course?

thanks for volunteering!  i've done pink power twice, and it's great to have the all male volunteer team.  my first year, the final water stop was guys in just tri shorts and bowties....can you beat that?

(i am not doing the race this year so feel free to make something up, i will never know)

Brought the bikes up last night. I imagine I'll be done volunteering about 10-ish? I'll have to go back to Glen Allen and get the bike, and the missus, and then head back to Shady Grove.  She'll do a lap, and then I'll peel off. Looking to get at least 50 in as training for Richmond Rox.

It looks like they posted a pre-ride for Rox for Sunday at 8am... but anyone who's a triathlete in Richmond should either be racing or volunteering at Pink Power anyway. Yell

Too bad weather didn't work out yesterday. The missus and I rode the Shady Grove course today, plus a detour loop off Ashland Road to Rockville Road back to Pouncey Tract. The latter two roads are nice, but Ashland between Pouncey Tract and I64 should not be tried on a bike; way too many dump trucks. Lots of industrial property on that short stretch.

So she made it back to the Y after 22 miles and I went back out for another 20. Weather was perfect today.

Yep. By the time I hit 288 and 360 the rain was really coming down. Glad it held off for the race though. Pretty good weather overall for most of the race.

I hope that I can get back down that way soon.

Planning on it but I haven't signed up yet. There is a slim chance we may be visiting friends in VA Beach that weekend so I have been holding off. If we go to the beach I will sign up for the Sandman Tri instead.

Thanks

It's actually a fairly straightforward bike course - there are a few little hills but they generally come after good downhills, so keep your momentum going. They don't shut down the traffic on Ashcake, so occasionally there are trucks (and not much shoulder) - I ride there and usually hold my breath for a short stretch, but Sunday mornings are less traffic and with multiple riders, the trucks usually behave. Be careful passing there, though. The ride back in from the country on Pouncey Tract is a false flat, just FYI. I hate that stretch.

I wouldn't sweat the no-preride. No big surprises.

Four years ago this morning I lost my Dad. I had something to prove, something to accomplish today. I was going to PR, no other option.

It was cold, but I under- (over?) estimated my swim seed time and got into the pool earlier than usual. It wasn't a great swim, but I was able to pass those that passed me in the pool in T1. The bike was good, and I jockeyed back and forth with another rider with a good pace. More on that later. T2 was quick, and despite the cold my legs still felt good going into the run. This run course is usually brutal in the sun, but it wasn't so awful under the clouds. I managed a solid sprint to the finish. Crossed the finish in 1:07:31. That's a PR on that course by over 4 minutes. To top it off, I took first in Clydesdales, my first win. Award, picture on the podium, and everything!

...

Ok, so more on the bike ride from yesterday. I was assessed a 2-minute penalty for drafting. It didn't affect the final standings, so in the end it's just insult without injury. Race Director Jay Peluso explained to me what the USAT ref had told him (Jay is a super nice guy and I have nothing but nice things to say about him and the rest of the event). But here's my take on what went down.

Racer
#76 and I (#75) were passing each other back and forth over the first few miles of the bike course. Out on Mountain road, he passed me, right as we heard a vehicle approach from behind, specifically loud motorcycle exhaust. We both got to the right, which yes, may have placed me in his draft. I was about two bike lengths behind #76 at this point. After a few seconds of the vehicle not passing, I gave a brief head check to see where he was, about five lengths behind me. A few seconds more, and I check again and can see that there was also a silver car behind the motorcycle. Frustrated, I stayed where I was until the motorcycle and following car passed after another 10 seconds or so. Only at that point I could see that it was the USAT ref.

Here's my argument:
>RD made a point to make sure everyone knew that the course was open to traffic and that we would have to be careful.
>Virginia Motor Vehicle code requires that cyclists in traffic must ride as far to the right as practicable.
>The Code also states that cyclists must also move into a single file when being overtaken from the rear [by a vehicle].
>RD told me after the race that even if I have been overtaken by another cyclist, I must move out of his draft. Therefore my options are, move to the left (unlawful, and dangerous because of overtaking traffic), move to the right (no shoulder), or brake (dangerous because of vehicle following).
>RD told me that the official told him that he usually allows a 20-count before assessing a penalty, but that he gave me a 45-count and I was still in the draft.  I'm sorry, but that is entirely, 100% untrue.
>Several times over the remainder of the bike course #76 passed me and then did not proceed to stretch out his lead on me, so I had to weave around behind him to stay out of his draft until I could pass him again. This wasn't an issue on Nuckols Rd, because it is wide with a shoulder.
>For the same reason you don't change lanes in an intersection in a car or alter your course and speed when being overtaken in a boat, I stayed behind the other cyclist because altering my position in that traffic pattern would have put me in danger.

Therefore, the USAT official chose to penalize me for staying behind the other cyclist, when any other action would have been either dangerous and/or unlawful. It's unfortunate that I wasn't able to get an explanation from the official after the race, that the official didn't take the RD's phone call, and that there is "no appeal process" for penalties.

Great job on the PR and the category win. I wish I would have had someone to push my pace on the bike and run. Without a carrot or stick I get lazy.

Too bad about the penalty. At least you are more aware now and have educated the rest of us also. I think most of us would have done the same thing and gotten a penalty.

What did they give out for awards? I placed 3rd in my AG but had to leave early.

Thanks, the awards were bamboo bib holders, really neat. Flip through the album on facebook, you'll see them. I don't want to speak for someone else but I bet if you contact Jay you can get your hands on it.

I had a pretty good race going until the halfway point of the run. My knees started hurting and had to run / walk back to the finish. Thought I had my knee pain behind me. Did a 12/2 mile brick today and had no pain. I was running on a limestone trail instead of concrete so maybe that was the difference.

Too bad on the drafting penalty. I only had one guy pass me and I tried to pace off of him but he pulled a ahead after a mile or so. I rode maybe 1.5 foot off to his left and about 4-5 feet behind so I hope that was legal.

I ran him down on the run but he passed me after I slowed down.

This was the first race with my tri shoes clipped in. Running though T1 barefoot was so much better. Haven't gotten to the flying mount yet but still managed a good transition.

Overall it was a good race for me.

I struggle with knee pain too, 4 years after acl/meniscus surgery. Some days it's no problem, some days I feel like i have sand in my knees.

Same goes for my bike shoes. Some days I can clip right in, some days I struggle. They are tri-specific and one strap, but still just a little too tight for me to get my feet in while riding. I have gotten good at sprinting in them through transition, but it does trash the cleats. I just chalk that up to cost of doing business.

Congrats on the podiums, guys - and sorry about the drafting penalty. The traffic was suck this year. I lost a lot of the momentum I wish I had had going up some of the hills because I got stuck behind a horse trailer who was too afraid to pass the biker in front of me. Don't remember that being as big a deal in previous years.
