Ugh.
I was volunteering in T1 and I saw some officials looking around at the handful of bikes that were still left in transition after everyone was out Andrew water and I wondered if something had happened. Was hoping for just an ordinary DNF.
Tragic.

Awful. Thoughts and prayers to the family. What the heck is going on? I know this point has been belabored here, but seems like a regular occurrence. Someone was pulled from the water in a race here in Cleveland last week. That gentleman made it thanks to the competitors who pulled him out and the responders on the beach.People losing heir life in the pursuit of a hobby and a healthy life.

Last year, someone died in the Nautica NYC Triathlon as well as a heart attack during same event.  That's very disheartening to hear.

This is sad, but I think we need to distinguish between the "swimmer wasn't prepared" side of the arguement and the "he had a bad heart" . I lost a friend of mine over 3 years due to a heart problem. He had just been to cardiologist and was cleared to begin training for his 2nd IM. Died at the hospital. Easily could have happened in a race.

I also am friends with someone whose fiance's died during the swim of a tri I did. That took some time to get past knowing that my wave was after his and they didn't recover his body until the next day near the swim exit. Frankly took some time for me to get back in the water. I watched what is family and friends went through. It wasn't pretty.

I feel terrible for his family and friends and will pray for them.

So very tragic, I'm so disheartened by all this. We lost someone in the small race I was in today during the swim, likely a cardiac arrest. Why? why?! I feel so bad for these families

I know how you feel. Last year we lost a runner during our church's 10K & 5K. I was one of the RDs and it hit me very hard. I too asked why did this happen. The man's wife is so strong in her faith.  She told me that she knows something good will come out of losing her husband.
