Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 41s
Overall Rank = 53/216
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 8/39
Pre-race routine:

PB & Bagel cup o Joe.

Overall times are vs male only. NYTC does'nt provide overall rankings there were 319 total participants

Event warmup:

It was windy and chilly standing around so I took a slow 8 minute run
got a warm-up swim in too! more below.

Hung out w/ Ben (Exor)and shivered together.
Swim
  • 13m 6s
  • 879 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Starting in the last wave had one huge advantage, I was able to take a warm up swim while the other waves were going off. It was GREAT! Got out all the jitters and I was able to get a running start, front of the pack, on the right!. I had NO breathing problems that I've experienced in the past. Went out a little too fast but was able to slow it down. Pretty clear path to the turnaround buoy where it was crowded. Once clear I started bitlateral breathing. There were no buoys marking the line and people were spread out. I had a tuff time sighting. More a function of my failing eyesight than anything else. Overall a great swim, excellent start, 1/2 w/ bilateral breathing, cuda sighted better but I'm thrilled w/ a 13:06 1/2 mile!
What would you do differently?:

Sight better, bilateral the whole way
Transition 1
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

Again NYTC uses a disposable chip so Transitions aren't broken out. I hate that! Swim on my watch just over 13 min. so I guess 3:36 incuding the run up the beach, WS removal and picking my up belt /helmet/glasses that were blown off by the wind sounds about right.

Tried the shoes on the bike, didn't work out to well. Got one foot in but not the other before the rubber band broke. Pedal starting spinning, momentum stopped, I almost fell over. Got rolling again and got in but definatley lost time.
What would you do differently?:

Either not put the shoes on the bike or practice more. My rack was only 10 yards from the timing gate so I don't think I wuda lost much time wearing my shoes. I think this is gonna depend on the venue. Just didn't think it was worth it.
Bike
  • 53m 44s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.87 mile/hr
Comments:

even w/ heavy wind and somewhat tired legs from a long training week I'm pretty happy w/ this ride. The hills were tough as expected but I really hammered the flats and downhills. Course familiarity really helped as I knew where to go for it. Another advantage of starting in the last swim wave, you pass lot of people on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, for a "training" day ride this was as good as it gets.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Total guesstimate (I hate this timimg system).

I was able to get my feet out of the shoes while on the bike and kick the leg over. I like the dismount, the shoes on to start, not so much!

I did have to sit to get my socks but it felt fast.
What would you do differently?:

For sprints I may try the sockless thing but gotta practice it first.
Run
  • 21m 50s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't feel this fast (for me). Legs were a little tight and I was passed by decent number of people. The turnaround did come quickly though and I was able to finish strong. All of my long runs made this feel quite short.
What would you do differently?:

push the middle mile a little harder
Post race
Warm down:

BS'd w/ Ben. Drank a free Red Bull. Bolted out to pick up my son from baseball practice and avoid wife grief.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I was at the end of a build week and the wind.

Event comments:

Given that this was unplanned and I was coming off a heavy volume training week I'm thrilled w/ my overall performance. A PB, beating last year's time by 11:28 and finishing top 10 in my AG, 8/39, I can't be happier.

Have I mentioned that I hate the timimg system? Irks me that NYTC puts on so many races and and doesn't use a chip that can time transitions. But Harriman does prvide a great venue, Ben was doing it and it's only 15 mins from home, so too easy to pass up.

Nice racing...good steady splits in all 3 events.  You should be in great shape when Timberman comes around!!

Sweet race man, awesome run split after a hard bike!  Looking at the HIM plan I'm going to follow, my Sprint & Oly races are also on high volume weeks, good to know it can still be done with good results too!

Nice Job Mark! I hear you on the timing thing. When I did the Xterra, there were no splits at all.....See you next week at Wyckoff, you should crush the course based on your excellent perfomance even with tough training week.

11:28 improvement in a year...lots more since you first did it....amazing...awesome...sweet!!

Top 10 finish to boot...your hard work shows through in your racing.

I had back surgery too about 10 years ago as well. Interesting on how being fit makes the pain go away most days, hugh?

Congrats on an awesome race, but more congrats on changing you, so you are faster & fitter, and I'm guessing having a blast tri'ing!
