Subject: Clyde Podiums in Age Group Well my story starts back in 2008 when I left the couch at 295lbs (5'9") and began a completely new life. The local YMCA Sprint Triathlon was an 800m swim, 16mi bike, and 5k over rolling hills. My 2008 finish was dead last in my age group at a time of 2:37:14. The 4-yrs following that first triathlon has been truly life changing. Over 50 events of various triathlons and running - cycling events have kept me motivated and fit, not to mention 80lbs lighter. I've completed several triathlons, including the Ironman 70.3 in Florida, half marathons, and the Air Force full marathon. Still as a 215 to 218lb 5'9" guy I'm not the typical age-grouper fit look triathlete. I'm much more tortoise than hare, but I've always made it to the finish. So this past weekend was that YMCA Sprint Triathlon once more; my 5th consecutive time. It really was a great day and I was having lots of fun. The swim went very well for me and I came out of the water and into T2 not gasping as much as in the past. The bike, well it was a PR day as I turned the screw over 18mph average over the 16miles. The run, as a big guy, is still not my strong point, but with weather being a blessing I was trotting the miles out. After the finish I visited with friends and gathered my gear as like every year before there was no reason for me to stick around for awards. As I was making the walk to my car a friend of mine called me and said "they just called your name for 3rd Place in your age group!" I was in complete disbelieve. It was true, with a finish time of 1:49:54 I was able to place as a Clyde in my 45 to 49 age group. I will tell you that it was one of the best feelings ever! Stay true to yourself and your goals. Most important, have fun, lots of fun. |
