Pre-race routine:

walk from car to race start, cold morning so waited til last possible moment to bag drop.
Breakfast - porridge/oatmeal, toast and peanut butter, cup of tea and 1L of water.
Run
  • 2h 23m 50s
  • 21 kms

Comments:

I used this as a training run so started very conservatively, increased speed at 7km and then again at 14km. Last 7km felt a lot faster and I overtook in excess of 20 people, I just targeted them - I would see them a few hundred meters ahead and think, okay I got you. Made it very enjoyable. The Galloway walkrun method works well in that you start slowly so by the end you have something in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

I would like to race this next year instead of using it as a training run. I'd like to sit with the 2hour pace balloon see how I go.
Post race
Warm down:

A coffee with the girls.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I held myself back plus niggling injury from two weeks ago, didn't want to risk it.

Performance: Good
Course: Undulating hills - deceptively hard, return leg seems way hillier! Plus you run past the start line for 750m uphill then back down to finish, this is mentally challenging if you don't know it's coming. Fortunately I knew!

Great job Jo!!  So hard to 'hold back' and use a race for training--sounds like you ran it perfectly!

Nice job, Jo!!  Loved your mental strategy of finding 'targets' and hunting them down.  And it seems the Galloway method was a smart choice given your injury and desire to use this as a training race.  Way to go, girl!

Nice job!!!!!!!!!!! So true about knowing the course in advance so you don't have issues when the route does something unexpected.  Having to run past a finish can be a challenge.

I think your new nickname is September

CONGRATULATIONS and very well done, perfect for a training run and not just getting race fever and letting yourself go. Well paced and good mental training for the tough course as well!
