Los Alamos Recreation Division
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 19s
Overall Rank = 32/122
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/12
Pre-race routine:

Local race, so i got to sleep in my own bed. Pre-race dinner of Steak and Sweet potato and Sweet potato and water for breakfast. This has been working for my gut this year. I also have been eating salty the day before and drinking a lot of water.
Event warmup:

The bike is first so I made a couple of spirited laps up and down the hill by the start line and called it good.
Swim
  • 10m 41s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim time is at least 35 seconds slower/100 than training and 40 slower than OWS races. I don't know why i am so off in this pool swim. It felt like my feet were going to touch the bottom, I got passed by a breast stroker. I hammered the bike, I didn't feel gassed, it's like I couldn't get my arms going. It wasn't until the start of the last 100 that I felt like I was swimming. I had to look like a drowning victim. Still faster than last year but I just prefer the typical Swim Bike Run format over this screwball bike swim run.
What would you do differently?:

I am not going to stress over it, maybe more Bike Swim bricks if I cared about it that much. It's gotta be the format cause all my other swimming times indicate I am only poor not horrible.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

T1 is Bike to Swim. Nothing noteworthy here.
Bike
  • 40m
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great bike, spun up the hard climb and hammered the rest. If you aren't from Los Alamos, and haven't ridden the course before it's definitely worth a pre-ride. It's difficult and knowing where to burn some and where to save some can really pay off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

This is Swim to Run. decided to forgo the socks on the run. Got a little blister but nothing too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

When I got out of the pool I was pissed, knowing I could/should have done better. I looked at my watch and didn't think I could break 1:20. I took off at an easy pace knowing the course was essentially uphill out and downhill back. When I got to the turnaround I realized I had a chance at breaking 1:20 and that motivated me to push it. I brought it home with all I had and PR'd the 5k, o I was really happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, had 1/2 of a Coke, which was the first one i have had in 6 months, dang it was sweet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim.

My age group is just tough. I finished 5th out of 12 and the 4 in front of me finished 2, 3, 4, and 7 overall. I beat last year by almost 8 minutes, so i am stoked about that.

Event comments:

This is a well run race. . . . But, if they are going to insist on Bike first change it to a time trial start for everyone. People were lining up in front with MTN bikes and it's mayhem to the 1st turn. I can't believe no one has caused a serious wreck yet. They TT the elite start and I thought it worked good
