Sunny
Total Time = 2h 24m 18s
Overall Rank = 128/950
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 26/142
Event warmup:

Little jog with pick ups then a little swim right before start
Swim
  • 26m 18s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

The mass start was CHAOS. This was the most combative start that I have EVER experienced. Wish I would have started row 1 instead of row 2...
Out to first buoy total chaos, then OK. I think that next straight leg I was right where I wanted to be, drafted well, and then at the next turn LOST it into the sun and between sun, waves, and catching slower waves lost the group and fell off pace...
What would you do differently?:

Start more in front. Swim training would be helpful :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

LONG transition so 1:40 seems slow, but it was partly the long run through the entire grass field. Also, my wetsuit was caught on the timing chip and I was just frustrated with the bad swim...
All in all OK. Didn't do the flying mount as the mount area was small and crowded and I wanted to get on safely.

Bike
  • 1h 10m 8s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.26 mile/hr
Comments:

I couldn't get a rhythm and never found a happy spot with cadence, speed or turnover. I feel like I should have been able to go faster but couldn't. Legs felt tight and tired the entire time.

What would you do differently?:

something in the lead up weeks I think. Less hills and more turnover?

Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

again LONG transition this time with the bike. Got to the spot and racked but the shoes got a little stuck since my feet were muddy and wet from the grass run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing. Did what I could
Run
  • 44m 54s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

WOW- my fastest run EVER for an OLY?? The course was short :) But still I felt like I had a GREAT run especially since I felt terrible on the bike. The first hill was tough but everything else felt easy. YAY!!

What would you do differently?:

Run faster with 2 miles left instead of waiting for last mile.

You wrote my swim race report.  I did the exact same thing-- got lost in the sun, had a choice of two groups to follow.  The group swimming left/straight seemed wrong in my mind.  Made the right decision and angled more "right" than felt like I should.  Then, behold!!!  The orange bouys!

That was the worst start ever.  I was hoping to get on the outside and ended up in the 2nd row in the middle.  Yuck.  I'll have to meet you next year!

Great race Julia!  For falling "off pace" you had a pretty speedy swim.  Nice bike and run as well!

Nice work! I agree on the swim start - that first buoy was mass chaos. Then adding 2+ ft waves and sun didn't help out. Still, a fun day. We finished almost in the same place in our AG's!
