About a month away, who's excited? I love this swim and Setup sent out an email with a picture of it, so I'm getting more excited now. This was the race I read about that inspired me to start doing triathlons and it's been a couple years since I've done it.

I really want to do well, especially considering how badly I've done lately. I can't remember, how are we supposed to "read" the currents? Is it the darker blue water that I want? I'll be down there, probably Thursday, but I doubt I'll practice it. I've never found the park I'm supposed to get out at when we aren't racing and I'd rather focus on playing with the kids for this trip.

Well you not going to see the water color diffrence in the morning or when you swimming. You need to swim where it feels cold thats where the current is and the deeper water so basically right down the middle

I am thinking about doing the race. Hell the bike course goes past my house. Can't really get a race any closer to home.

I swim this every Friday, as Livestrong said, cold water is deep water and faster current My advice would be to watch the waves before you, see how much they get pulled to the right during the start. Once you get across Banks channel stay in the middle. Stay to the left of the red channel marker, there is an eddy between the red marker and the shore that will slow you down. From there head to the green channel marker with the green light on it, then it's a straight shot to Seapath.
If you are looking to practice the course you can get out at the park, just follow the shore when you pass the red marker and it's on the right Just watch out for the oyster beds near the stairs.
Good luck, see you there.

i got this same advice last year, probably from Nick, but kept getting pulled to the right by the current and never got near the red buoy.  However when I got between the red and green buoy I really felt the current.  So aim a little further left than you think you have to if you want to get to the red buoy and get the most help from the current.  I usually swim that distance in 40 minutes but it only took me 30 minutes due to the current and I was having hamstring issues that day and limped around the bike and run course.  THis year I wanted to redeem myself but it turns out that I'll be out of state that weekend.  I'm substituting the Shipwreck Sprinternational at Holden Beach.  The Wilmington YMCA is a great race, enjoy!

There's still some time and space to get into this race. I love the swim here. Looks like water temp is 79-81, I suppose a fluke in where they measure could show wet suit legal. http://www.cormp.org/ I'm kind of hoping not, but I definitely don't want to get surprised race morning.

Even though it hasn't filled, this will be the biggest race I've done sice doing this one in 2009. Not looking forward to getting up at 3am to drive down, but I can't wait to start the race.

I wonder how much cutting the corner at Wrightsville Ave is going to shorten the bike course. Water temp is 80*, I don't see it honestly dropping 2 degrees, but it really depends on where they measure it so I'll take the wetsuit just in case.

My race numer is 183. I'll be driving down race morning and racing with my niece (adult) doing her 1st race.

ETA: Woo hoo! I don't start until 7:10. It doesn't sound like much, but having missed my start time here, I can use an extra 10 minutes.

I wonder how much cutting the corner at Wrightsville Ave is going to shorten the bike course.

It looks like the 2012 bike course about 3/4 mile shorter than in past years.

Well that's good news for me, then, My only goal, besides enjoying the hell out of the swim, is to average 20mph on the bike. I don't care if I have to walk the run, I've never managed to average over 20 and a short, flat race is my best shot.

The swim is actually pretty fast if you factor in the current. I went out this am and went from the Elbow (by the turn to the Oceanic) to Blockade Runner at 6:30. Low tide was at 5:35 (ocean side) this am so it wasn't pushing us too much. Hopefully it will be a bit better tomorrow, especially considering the fact that we'll be going across the channel and not parallel.

Watch that water/air temp though. It was freaking cold this am!! Water felt good though once we got going.

I forgot to turn on my Garmin at the beginning of the bike, what did you get for the distance on the bike course?  I couldn't find an official distance on the Setup set.  They kept on saying 20k before the race though (12.4 miles).  Is that about right even after the bike course change for this year?

Does the shirt say 20K? We should just go with that, because then I made my goal. Cool Even calling it 12 is fine.

My Garmin is still in the car, but I'm going with 11.32 based on mapping it here for lack of anything better: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=181397
