Ok, I did my first Oly and did good for me. My goal time was to be between 3:15-3:30 and i finished in 3:06 so i was very happy. I've never been satisfied with my time so for once i'm satisfied with it and like i said 2nd in age group which is shocking to me. The field in my age group though is like 6 women so my question is isn't even worth mentioning if people asked me how well i did ? It's seem's a little silly and presumptious to me to bring it up but at the same time i always felt in the way back of the pack so yeah i'm a little proud of it and part of me wants to mention it..

Any thoughts?

Nathalie

You finished and that is something to be proud of.  You finished in 3h06 and that is a pretty good time so be proud of that also.  And, you finished second in your age group!  Great!  It does not matter that there was a small field, you are still second, so BE proud!

Hey, I came in second in my age group in a half marathon recently and feel okay with the fact that there were only two of us in that age group.

You have bragging rights! Consider the field to include all women within an hour's drive of your race. So really you are in the top tier in a field of thousands (at least). Consider them to be DNS. You trained, you started, you finished. You did awesome!

Be proud, you had a great race, especially for your first. It is not like you were 2 out of 2, there were 4 more competitors in your group behind you. If you feel funny telling people then you can always add your overall or sex place - "75th overall and second in my age group" or "25th overall women and second in my age group."

Personally I always think that race results are defined by overall place and group place. Racing is a competition and we do it to compete so the results are defined by our place and times. Otherwise we would just swim, bike and jog by ourselves.

GREAT RACE!

The way I look at it, you were second out of the six hoss chicks who had the 'nads (figuratively) to show up. Even Number Six beat the thousands who didn't.

Even if you were 2nd of 2 I'd go with it on the basis of others didn't even show and you beat all of them.

A 5k I did earlier this year I was stunned I took first in my AG - 6th overall (also a pretty small race).  Then I saw how poorly the rest of the my AG did which is very unusual for M30-39.  The second place guy was in 45th overall.  I don't care, I'm not going to see hardware very often so I'm taking it.  It was cold and rainy and windy.  Maybe 20 guys stayed home who would have smoked me but I sacked up and ran it so dangit, I'm keeping my medal!

Hardware's hardware.  Relish in the glow of saying you took 2nd place in your last race.  People will genuflect in awe.  Congratulations!

exactly.  You took second, of course you should brag about it.  It's called wise choice in event planning.  Most athletes do it.  You just happened to do it by accident.

if you placed, you placed. doing an oly is an accomplishment in itself. placing is such fun, so be proud that you did! my husband and i have won our co-ed team category at a local duathlon the last two years...racing against 2 other teams. so we ALL placed.

its funny, but last year one of my best races time wise i was racing against a medium sized field, but a very TOUGH field, and i finished bop in my ag despite having a good race. later that year, i did an oly and had mediocre times, and got 1st athena AND 2nd in my age group.

I'm possibly going to be in a similar situation this summer with my HIM. Last year and the year before there were no F 20-24 in the half. When I did my first sprint tri, I won my AG because I was the only F 19 and under registered, even though it took me nearly 3 hrs to complete it. It sort of sucks because I like to hunt people based on their calf number, but it means I can try to pick off the boys in my AG! You dragged yourself out of bed, swam, biked, and ran, and finished. The fact that you got hardware is just the icing on the cake . I'd be happy and proud because you took the incentive and had the drive to finish.

The first half-marathon I did, I had a lousy time, but I got 2nd in my age group (there were only 3 women in my age group). I have a nice trophy that I keep in my office. Sometimes, if the person who is asking the question seems kind of arrogant, I flip my hair back, put my hand on my hip and say, "Yeah. I got second place in my age group." And leave it at that. Other times, I laugh and tell the whole convaluted story about how it was a cold March day with 20 mph winds and snow and blah blah blah and eventually tell them that I got second out of 3 women who bothered to show up.

So----enjoy it. Like the others said, you showed up and you finished and you earned the trophy!

one other thing to chew on - its a RACE!!!

race n 1. A competition of speed, as in running or riding.

in this race, you were the 2nd fastest in this category. while its good to look at the big picture, in this race, you outraced all but one of the other women in your category. you should be proud!!

You finished in the top 33% of your age group and you met your goal time.. That's a great showing.  All in a race that had less than ideal conditions. well done!

Now when someone asks how my race went I usually say something like "Great! I met my goal time and really enjoyed myself, thanks." Then I ask them about their weekend.

I finished third in AG in my first 10k. It was a small race and my AG had 6 folks. So what? I got the hardware! I did the work to finish. So did you. Good for you! Hooray!

You should be proud of yourself and what you were able to accomplish!  That's great.  Be proud and show it off a little. You were second in your AG.  Not anyone can do that, even if there are only 6 people.  I certainly can't.  So, you should tell people you placed because you did.

I have a medal from a race I took 2nd in.  There were 3 people and the third started 20 minutes late....

But I still beat every slob who stayed in bed that morning!

You can only beat who you race. Look at it from the other end of the spectrum, if you PR'd by 30 minutes, which would be great but you finished last in your age group is that still good? Of course it is. If you were racing with all of the National Champs in your AG you probably would not have come in 2nd....but out of who was at the race, you did come in second. Be proud and you earned bragging rights in my eyes.

thank you for all the responses. It does make me feel good. I'm just not used to it. A great confidence builder and just in time for my next event which is my first HIM. Lots more training for that one!
