Subject: Triathlon Gear...underwear

I have done a handful of triathlons and I have always had this issue. As a woman, what do you wear under your triathlon shorts? I have previously worn bathing suit bottoms, as I don't like the idea of swimming in my underwear. I have a couple friends who said they don't wear anything under their shorts, which always seemed weird to me.

So I just want to put this question out to all women who do triathlons- what do you wear under your shorts??

think of your triathlon shorts and bike shorts as having built in underwear.  Do not wear anything under them.   Wash them after every use.  Some people even walk straight in the shower with them on and rinse them as part of showering.  I have multiple pairs of bike shorts so I am able to do a load on gentle in the machine per week.

Nothing gets between a triathlete and their shorts, except maybe a little Body Glide or Chamois Butter.

Seriously, nothing.  It seems weird but you will get used to it very quickly.

Female or male, an extra layer under the tri/cycling shorts is not a good idea.  It will get really uncomfortable if the layers rub together and start to bunch up.

Your tri shorts double as underwear. People will stare and laugh at people wearing underwear with tri shorts.

It's true. As a n00b last year, I went on my first community bike ride and donned a pair of undies under my bike shorts. I'm quite sure there was pointing and snickering towards my rear end. That ended my underwear wearing with bike shorts. I've also stopped wearing them with running shorts, as mine have this meshy underwear built in. Commando baby. LAUGH AT ME NOW!

I wouldn't even think of putting anything else on with my tri shorts!

No undies.  It would look awful under your tri shorts AND soak up water and be disgusting for the rest of the race since cotton doesn't dry as fast.

As a man, I wear nothing unde tri shorts. Made to wear that way. Wet undies under a tri short would cause me all kinds of problems.

In the winter I wear sport boxer-briefs under my sweat pants or sometimes under compression capri pants.

But this is to keep my man parts warm.

Though I know my wife does the same.

Guess rule is:

Workout gear longer than knee->underwear

Workout gear shorter than knee -> comando

Nothing!  I don't wear any while biking or while running.  My running shoes and tights have something built in, so there's no need.

Commando (plus sides are comfort and no panty lines).  Consider chamios cream to reduce friction for longer bike rides (I actually use desitin creamy from the local Target/CVS).

I normally wear UnderArmour Boxer Briefs.  Similar in material to compression shorts.  I like the support they provide.

I thought the whole point of triathlon shorts was so that you didn't have to wear a swimsuit. I bought a tri suit so that I wouldn't have to solve the problem of pulling on shorts over my swim suit. It seemed like it would be too much fabric in the crotchular area.

But I always go commando in my running shorts and bike shorts now, so it just seems right. Once I discovered the joys of lined running shorts, I never went back to underwear. I also live in the rainforest (exaggeration) and prefer the least amount of clothes on as possible to manage my UHL.
