Subject: Couple of questions....

Ok, I'm hoping you guys can clear up a couple of issues that DH and I are having.....

1.  DH and I are following a training plan, and today's workout is a bike ride, endurance, 45 min, RPE 5-6.  DH wants to go mountain biking, which is fine.  Do I log this in the bike portion, or under the sports section for mtn biking?  If I mark it under sports, I don't get "credit" in my planned vs. actual charts.  But it feels like cheating if I put it under biking.... Thoughts?

2.  Completely unrelated to first question.... have two girls, ages 7 & 11.... they enjoy riding their razor scooters.  DH makes them wear helmets, but I question the need for this.  You wouldn't make them wear them if they were walking or running, so why with the scooter?  Again, anyone have any viewpoints?  (They'll continue to wear the helmets however unless I can prove to DH that they don't need them.....)  Just curious.

Thanks, all!

1. Count any mileage as mileage. It is a different type of biking, but so what.

2. Wear the helmets. If my wife ever tried to win an argument by saying, "But my friends on BT.com told me that..." I would laugh at loud. Seriously.

1. I would log it in the bike portion, after all, it is a bike ride.

2. Obviously this is a question each parent has to answer for him or herself. In our household the rule was anything other than your own two feet requires a helmet, such as scooters, bikes, rollerblades, and anything motorized. I think the risk is just not worth the inconvenience of using a helmet. I also had several helmets available for friends that "forgot" theirs when they came over. Also, my husband and I always wear a helmet when we ride.

On the helmets, on the scooter they're more likely to go flying off it and hitting something than they would be just walking or running around.  I'd keep them on the little ones.

No offense, but I'm having a really hard time grasping the thought of actually advocating that your kids NOT wear helmets. 'Nuff said.

I'd say go ahead and log the mtb session in your biking area. it's a good workout, and you earned. don't feel like you're cheating. you're doing a wonderful thing!

Yes, I guess it was dumb that I consider my children not wear helmets... it was just a random brain fart.  No excuses......

As for mtn biking, you've convinced me.  Headed out the door now to do just that, and will mark it in biking.    YEA!

BIKING!!!
Rather than endurance it counts more towards a power workout. Now go climb some hills!

Kids should wear helmets whenever it's questionable. DEFINITELY on a scooter
We have enough dumb adults running around!!

Mountain biking, even on flat, paved, roads is harder (per mile) than "cycling" (heavier bike, more rolling resistance, more wind resistance), so count it as biking.

As for helmets...have you priced replacement heads/brains? Pretty expensive, and a helmet is a pretty easy way to reduce the odds of a catestrophic event. In our house, helmets are required for bicycles and rollerblades (first infraction is a week w/o, second infraction is the rest of the season). Most youth groups require helmets for riding a horse or rock climbing (as well as bicycling). This one has to go to DH.

Husbands take note, in at least one instance, one of us was right!! It is possible!

Well this is no good... one husband being right means my turn won't come around for way too long!

Oh well... this one was one of the important times... helmets, they're not just for biking anymore.

 Peace.

Count it as biking for sure. Mtn biking is a lot harder, IMO, than road cycling, so I'd ALWAYS count it as bike time. It'll probably bring down your mph avg though.

As far as the scooters, kids are more likely to fall off of them than a bike I think. Also, they need to wear elbow pads. My sis is a physical therapist and she says that kids who fall off scooters have a high incidence of breaking their elbows. This is why she won't let her kids ride scooters at all, as the elbow is a very delicate mechanism especially with growing bones and so on.

I would want my kids to wear a helmet for scooters, and elbow pads, knee pads, wrist pads.  I bought them the pads for roller blades, but they work for other sports as well.  And the pads are CHEAP compaired to a doctor visit, emergency room co-pay and .....

Do a short cost benefit study on it.  Replacement parts are expensive and hard to come by.
