Subject: Tossing clothes in a Half Marathon?
I'm doing the Disneyland Half this weekend. The projected start temperature is 66, which means I will want to run without a shirt, but will probably be a little chilly standing around beforehand. The other half marathons I've done have been pretty small, so it wasn't a big deal to stow my shirt/jacket in the car shortly before the race started. This is a large race and I want to get there nice and early. Do you think throwing away a shirt right before the race starts would be a problem? I know it's common for marathons, but what about a half?

Clothes are collected for charity.  I've seen it done in halfs.  If in doubt, contact the race director.

I have shed clothing at many races including HM's.  If they have a designated spot for clothing use that otherwise I just toss them at an aid station.

I've seen it done at larger HMs. I wore a plastic bag for one I did in March b/c I didn't have any clothes I wanted to get rid of. Worked quite well.

My wife did the Princess Half Marathon at Disney and she along with 1000's of others tossed sweat shirts and jackets before and during the race. It was very cold that year. Like someone else said I think those clothes went to charity. I think they requested you drop at aid stations or left them at the start.

I did a HM in South Dakota this year, in April.  Starting temp was 51 degrees.  They were collecting clothes at the half way point and bringing them back to the start.  We knew about it at registration and it worked well.  Anything left over was going to be cleaned and donated to the Goodwill.

I didn't toss my Under Armor cold gear compression shirt, but did toss a decent long sleeved shirt.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll toss one of my old cotton race shirts at the start. It doesn't take me long to heat up once I'm moving Smile

Every half I have done they have had volunteers picking up clothes at all aid stations & start line and all get donated to charity. I think you will be good and have a great race.

An old cotton shirt should be perfect! I'm always cold, but never at the Disneyland Half. Once you get in your corral with all the other runners, the heat from all the bodies will warm you up.

Ditch it at the start. The course is a bit tight for the first couple of miles and you don't want to have be fumbling with a shirt in the middle of the crowd.

BIG SELFISH TIP:  If you don't really care about your shirt going to charity, then cut a "V" into the top and across any seams.  You can then rip the shirt in 2 in front instead of pulling it over your head.  It makes what's left over useless for charity, but you can dump it in an aid station garbage can and avoid littering.

I'll be there too. Good luck.

Since it won't be too cold, an old shirt will work. One of those rain covers from Walmart ($0.99) does the trick for me. I've always tossed mine over the railing of the corral right before the start. They will be collected and donated to the local charities.

Please tell me you've done this.  Seeing this would ruin my run as I'd spent the rest of the morning laughing my off.

I don't know if I could make it work...

I should have waited another day before bothering you fine people. Disney just posted this on their blog: http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/ewwos/sports/runDisney/PackingList.... on the list:

Bring warm clothes you can throw-way for pre-race. It’s chilly at 4 AM, and Disney donates them to charity!

Good luck to the other BTers running the race Smile
