stateu - 2013-02-19 11:35 AMHow did it go kstater?Finished. Tough day for me. Was doing well the first 50k. However, walked the rest. The slope going west took its toll on my knees and feet. Would love opinions of everyone on a ?. I have had a good bit of trouble increasing milage. Is this something that improves as most of you progressed in your ultra career? Could use some advice or stories of experience. I had a much easier adjustment in triathlon progression. I had no athletic experience 4 years ago. However, progressed to IM in 3 years. No KQ by any means. But adjusted well. The ultra training and even more so the race was tough. Thanks for any advice. How was your race stateu?

Increasing run distance is definitely tough. I did it over many years. Starting running about 11 years ago. Did pretty much 1 marathon a year the first 8 or so years, then started doing 1 spring 1 fall. Just last year did my first 50 mile, 2 marathons, IM. This year, first 50k then 50 mile with Boston and NYC scheduled so far.
Plus, the conditions-sand, water, slope, wind- in Destin can make for a tough day.
I had a great race 7:09, 2nd overall. That guy who won is superhuman. 6:19 50 mile! Really?!!?

One of the powers of Tri is 'Spreading the Stress' and when you switch to a single sport, running is gonna be the toughest.
Congratulations on choosing the completing the 50m, that's a MAJOR accomplishment, and especially on Sand. Good grief!
Well done.
There are quite a few Ultra folks here, I'm going to keep reading them and the oh so many blogs out there. Some show how to do it, many show how not to do it.
I may do a single 50m and call it good, but I am looking forward to it!
Keep up the good work.
