I set my schedule last night.  I am signed up for the Kansas 5i50, Tinman, Mudwater, and Manhattan Tris.  5i50 and Manhattan are sprints, and Tinman/mudwater are Olympic

I thought taking it easy for my first year doing triathlons was a good idea!

close, but not exactly olympic. You will have an awesome first year!

Oh so tempting to camp.  It is a pain to have to drive from town to Clinton, back to town and back to Clinton if you missed anything.  Then back to Clinton on race morning to get a decent spot so you aren't hiking 20 miles to the car and back... but sleeping on a real bed with AC/heat or whatever is needed at that time of year is MIGHTY appealing, too.

Maybe take the difference of hotel vs camping and buy a portable generator to keep cell phone charged and a mini-fridge for ice.

I am solving that problem by taking my wife up on her suggestion after last year's race:  rent an RV and get a campground spot.  So, if that RV's a rockin', don't come a knockin'!!!"

Oh, wait.  The kids will be with us. . . . . Nevermind.  Go ahead and come a knockin'.

What campsite did you get?  Close to 21 please.

Well I finally decided that my first ever Tri will be the KC Tri (Sprint) Kind of a karma thing since photographing the event last year is what inspired me in the first place to start doing tri's.

This will be followed by the St. Louis 5i50. Super PSYCHED!

Good news, Ranski.

My race schedule (as of now) is: KC Tri (oly), Topeka Tinman (long) St. Louis 5i50 (oly) so we'll (hopefully) be able to meet up.  My nephew is also jumping in and is also going to do the KC tri (sprint distance).  He also lives in Shawnee.  Maybe in the spring we can meet for a training ride.

Cell phone charged and mini-fridge!? My friend it's called a vehicle charger for your phone and a cooler for your beer ice And an air mattress. I have a Coleman battery-operated pump if anyone needs to borrow it! Inflates/deflates in about 90 seconds. Bam.

For what it's worth, I just found out that the triathlon part of the Heritage park event has been cancelled.  It was a great beginner race, but the turnout definitely has been suffering over the past few years.

That's too bad.  I live about 2 miles from Heritage Park, but haven't ever done this race.  I did the duathlon in 2010 and totally weenied out on the tri in 2011 when the temps were in the 40's with rain.  (regretted it ever since)

I considered treating it as a training race last year, but I just couldn't really get excited to do it.  Plus there are always the grumblings about water quality and I think that finally pushed me over the edge.

On a side note, it looks like they're adding a 5k & a 10k.  I don't know if I've ever seen a multisport/open running combo event like that.  I suppose it wouldn't be that bad in a closed setting like the park.  Looks like they changed the duathlon to be 5k for both run legs (first leg used to be 2m), so they can share courses easily.

They'll have to get creative about traffic routing, though, or they'll end up with a bunch of 5k runners waiting for the bike course to clear before they can leave.

That was my first triathlon. Haven't regretted it

They extended early bird pricing a few days for the KC Tri.......I'm guessing # of people is lower than desired at this point.  I would have done both races even if they were back to back weekends.  Go figure...

Makes you wonder how bad they will be hurting to turn a profit if they are already willing to give up on higher entry fees.Do they still have the race even if entries are low al-la 5150 and WTC?

Excellent! Would definitely be interested in meeting up for a training ride - also it will be nice to know someone at the St. Louis race. Once they announce the course I plan on heading to St. Louis to visit my parents and scout out the course.

My first thought as well, even though they said it was due to the "crazy" number of registrations they had received.  Crazy low maybe.

I don't know what they expect.  They missed the market on early birds (myself notwithstanding)

Anyone know what's going on with Midwest Mayhem, Meltdown & Jackson Co Tri?  Websites have been down for several days.

We try to keep a running list of all the KC area races on the Leavenworth Triathlon Club website.

JHawk...you used to have "placeholders" for the 3 "Midwest" events...now you have completely taken them off your website race schedule.  Do you know something we don't?  Does anybody know what is giong on with those?

I really wanted to do all three this year, since they are all relatively close, so I'd be really bummed if they didn't happen.  I just e-mailed the race director...I'll let you all know if I find something out.

Haven't heard anything.  I took them down since no one has heard anything and their FB pages disappeared also.

I hope I'm wrong though.  Not the best race series around, but nice to have some options.

I was at UltraMax this past Saturday. I asked about the Meltdown and if they knew anything since it isnt on their events calendar. They guy said, "I'm not sure, I know we have addes some races for this year the 5150s and dropped a few".

I have pinged the Midwest Series race director twice now, and no response.  I'm still holding out hope though.

I realize it isn't the perfect series, but for those of us that want to get in a bunch of close "olympic" events, it is ideal.

He e-mailed me back "The sites are up and we’ll be updating things this week."  Sure enough...the Series is back for 2013!

07/21 – Lawrence Midwest Mayhem
08/18 – Lee Summit Jackson County
08/25 – Paola Midwest Meltdown
