Bad Arolsen, Hesse
Germany
Team Events
36C / 97F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 22s
Overall Rank = 77/131
Age Group = M40
Age Group Rank = 8/14
Pre-race routine:

Left home at 7am, had a 2 hour drive, maybe a bit more, transition was suppsedly closing at 10:15, race discussion at 10:30

The drive was pretty tiring, lots of small roads and some switchbacks, less than half the distance was on Autobahn

I had one ClifBar around 8am, plus one breadroll with cream cheese

We were in first wave at 11am
Event warmup:

No warm up, at that point it was already in the high 20's
It was actually a welcome cooldown to jump into the lake

Everyone had to enter via a pontoon, that was a bit hairy as it was not designed to hold 30+ triathletes at the same time
Swim
  • 15m 55s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim overall, navigation went surprisingly well
I even drafted a bit

Exiting the water was a bit difficult, larger rocks in a steep bank

THe run up to transition was brutal, was passed by at least a dozen of people right there
What would you do differently?:

Pick a flat race:-)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No seperate timing of T1 or T2, both are included in bike time

Right after mount line the terrain was sloping down, with a sharp left turn ahead, was extra super careful
Bike
  • 54m 18s
  • 22 kms
  • 24.31 km/hr
Comments:

It was already very hot at that point (35 C) and I took it extra easy to make sure that I would not blow up on the run

Did not even try to push up the hills but immediately shifted down and went up easily. But to be honest, probably did not have the fitness to do it any other way...:-(((
What would you do differently?:

Work out!!!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 33m 9s
  • 5.56 kms
  • 05m 58s  min/km
Comments:

Again, took it extra easy not to blow up
It was tough to go down that steep hill knowing that we would have to go back up again!
In the second half I was walking a smaller uphill portion along the lake and the big hill. Did not care about time at all, just wanted to finish and have fun!

Interesting results in age group, I was obviously "sandwiched" between the 7 overall stronger folks ahead of me and the 6 weaker guys way behind me...
What would you do differently?:

Not more to be done...
Post race
Warm down:

Felt pretty good, filled up on water, sports drink, (non alcoholic) beer

Walked back a bit to cheer on Andrea (she was in the same wave, finishing approx 10 min later)

Legs were doing fine, was able to jog a bit

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just look at my log, was barely working out this year
It was still good to do at least sprint races and still get the feeling of finishing

Event comments:

Very good race, this was the 30th time they ran it, one of the oldest races in the country for a good reason

If you are prepared for hills, this race is great!
