Master 1517 Raleigh | Subject: Finish Strong Half Iron With all the talk on IMRal next year, who's in for the FS Half Iron race this yr? http://www.fsseries.com/index.php?action=event&event_id=521 I see they created an aqua bike too which can be appealling for those who hate running and or those exhausted from IMLou !
This race is right around the corner! Edited by halfpint 2012-09-02 8:48 AM |

I am doing B2B in October- to me, a small HIM isn't worth the training because I like to make a it into more of an event. I really like the races that I have done that FSSERIES has put on, but for the longer stuff, I just like bigger races. |

The small race was fine, but it's much funner, IMO, to race a larger event and make an event out of it. BTW, I have only raced one FSSeries event and it was very well run...and competitive. |

Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Finish Strong Half Iron I'm doing it. This is my first and only race this season (Tho I am thinking of the White Lake International as a tuneup - my kids are doing Dash for Divas, so I'll be at White lake that weekend for a little vaca!) For me, signing up for a HIM race forces me to train to keep in decent shape. That is my primary goal now in racing. I like the smaller event because it's more fun and less expensive. And I love FS Series, those guys rock! |

be honest, you're just scared we're in the same AG...oh wait..
Keyone, with the way you've been handling the rides I've been on with you...i think you're bike game is on point. Edited by halfpint 2012-09-02 9:43 AM |

You got me :-) Actually, you have a few more years until you are old like me. Back to the start of this post- I actually think the Raleigh 70.3 will impact White Lake more than the FS race at the end of this month (which in turn competes with B2B and other late-season tris, or is a tune-up for B2B). |

Expert 1342 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: Finish Strong Half Iron Heading out again this Saturday (9/8) for a course preview. Hopefully it won't be quite as hot, and I'll have my bike nutrition a little more dialed-in. Looking for an 8am start (will park "in the park" again). If anyone wants to join, I'm shooting for 18.5-19.5mph average this time. |

Thanks http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=181089 Also, the maps page has been updated on the race website. It's not that the hills are terrible, it's that they come at a bad time. |

I just looked at the overall feet of climbing and compared it to my normal training, and thought, "Oh, that's not bad at all". Then I read your note! So, I'll be sure to save some for the last bit of the bike! |

Master 1704 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Finish Strong Half Iron The Garmin connect file show 2900ft and the BT route shows 1000ft. Probably somewhere in the middle. Augusta was 1200ft (according to my adjusted elevation profile) so I can't imagine Raleigh is flatter than augusta. Also doubt it is near 2900ft as that would be pretty hilly for 56m. |

I ride a roughly equivalent route (not the exact route but a lot of the same hills) and it ends out being 1500 or so ft, which is much more accurate than the 2900 on that garmin file. Regardless of the amount, I agree fully with fgump- nothing "that bad" but they are hills you have to pay attention to and can chew up your legs if you go too hard. |

May i request some info on the road surface? Thanks I love riding down that way...generally very smooth roads with lots of trees. There are some not-great spots but it is a 56 mile route, so not everything is going to be 100%. But most of the route is smooth and really nice to ride on. |

Yup, which is why you have to turn the "elevation correction" feature on- fixes a lot of the elevation issues. As for the calories burned, on the bike it is meaningless...I burned 2700 calories (according to Garmin) on a 15 mile ride once! :-) |

7 day forecast has it in the 80s until this weeked and then in the 70s next week. If it stays in the 70s during the day and 50s/60s at night, with some rain once in a while, you might get your wish :-) |

Expert 1342 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: Finish Strong Half Iron Water temp today...81. Come on, come on...rain will help, as will lower temps. I would love to use the wetsuit! It's going to be a dark setup out there Sunday! Sunrise is after race start. Sun to the right on the outbound leg, to the left on the inbound. I breathe right, so once we clear the turn, I'm home free! |

Expert 1342 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: Finish Strong Half Iron FYI: Did a little digging to find location of water stops. Per the bike course map turn by turn info, there will be stops at the right turn from Old 1 onto Corinth Rd, and also at the right turn from Hwy. 42 onto Lick Creek Rd. after crossing over the Cape Fear. Those are miles 18 and 31 respectively. I would not try to do the last 25 miles without 2 bottles of water onboard. http://www.fsseries.com/uploads/910201211710_fs_bike_course.pdf It's going to be a good day! |
