Subject: End of season and bummed out

I new that my Olympic tri on Sunday was going to be my last one for the year.  Had a great race and felt like:  "Ok, it's time to take a break".   Went to the pool today to do a nice swim and went 3,000 yards at a good pace.

A buddy asked me: "When's your next event?".  Then it hit me.  My next tri is not until April / May.

I may throw in some 5K / 10Ks or even a HM, but dangit, my next tri is not until April / May. I'm bummed out about it.

Any advice from the BT community??

Go race a few Du's.  Run an ultra.  Do some long tours or ultra centuries.  Have fun!

Fall and winter is running season. Pick a marathon perhaps

I feared the same after winning my age group in a Sprint.  Here were my solutions.
  1. Schedule a trip to an Olympic in the South.  We have the Toyota US Open in Dallas on 10/7.
  2. Schedule a HIM in the Spring.  Mine is Galveston (Texas HIM).

Editing - the Toyota is on 10-7.

I hear ya.....I wanted to get to TriRock Lake Geneva in a couple weeks and I don't think it's going to happen.  All that's left is some du's and a few running races.  It's been an up and down year for me with some great/fun races and a lot of injures (an accident, hip flexors  and weighting) and didn't meet my goals of a oly this year.  Oh......and Winter sucks.

My adrenaline is still frantically pumping for my last tri race (and first Oly race) in 3 weeks, so I haven't hit your stage, well not yet anyway!

The only viable solution I can think of: Hit the southern hemisphere during their tri summer.  Of course, you'll need plenty of money and be able to take time off work, but that's the only obvious solution

I really work on technique, speed and form in my off season, as the Arizona winter becomes my serious training season, as the summers are always so damned hot!  I'm really going to work on my running: 5k and 10k events and maybe, just maybe, even consider a half mary sometime in my future!!!! That is, of course, if I can remain injury-free in my running this year

Yup, fall marathon over here, too.

I never thought I would say this, but I kind of miss the pool.

I'm the opposite.  I raced a lot in the last 3 years...and I'm ready for a break.  I still look forward to training...probably at a volume that's close to what I would be training if I were focusing on a race...but just without the structure and pressures of meeting goals.  I just want to spend the next several months swimming, biking, and running.

Bummer.  Best part of the year coming up for me.  I have a Sprint in 2 weeks, HIM end of September and a full IM the first of November.  Then a lot of cool running races throughout the winter.

Love living in the South!

Overreach a little for next year whether it be a bigger distance or time goal. Just a little to scare you a little to motivate you to train harder.

Think of it as a preseason and not an off-season.

I finished though.. got shocked 3 times.

there is a tough mudder in Minneapolis in the spring that I may be doing.  Of course it's not until May.

I'm signing up for a "winter triathlon" in March in Brookings South Dakota (yeh, it's frickin cold in Brookings in March).  Then the regular tri circuit for me starts.  I would love to register for an IM, but the thought of all the needed training and my wife home with 3 naughty boys seems insurmountable.

Probably stick to mostly sprints, oly's and one big HIM in August or September again.  Maybe 2014 IM Arizona.  God, that's 26 months away from now!!!

I like the idea of calling this down time the "preseason" vs the post season!!

I'm right there with you! I'm pretty depressed coming down from the racing high. I used to be a runner for years and it was fine but after my first tri I knew I wanted to be a triathlete! It was awesome! Now it's all over and all I have on the horizon are some running races. Worst part is that running is my most hated of the SBR equation. I did manage to get some money though so I can buy a proper bike and do some riding but once the snow and ice comes that will slow down too. Boo

My only scheduled tri was cancelled this summer. However, I had the most productive training season ever. It is starting to get colder here, so the first thing to go will be swimming. Then biking, then running. My job gets significantly harder in the Winter. I plan on doing a lot of XC skiing to keep some base, and try to commute to the pool which is a logistical nightmare. I plan on also joining a gym to spin some pedals. I also plan on getting a new job.

Do some duathlons.  My last one was going to be the Atlantic City Tri in two weeks.  But my portion is only the swim, so I'm squeezing one in this coming weekend.

To keep me honest, I'm going to do a couple du's and maybe some 10Ks in the colder weather.

I'm in the opposite boat. I did my last tri for the year in July and since then, I've really enjoyed going to the pool and/or biking without any specific goals in mind. At least with running, not every run is a hard effort, but I think I was getting burned out by having every swim and bike be a hard workout.

Come later this Fall, I'll figure out my planned races for next year and alter my workouts accordingly, hopefully refreshed from the break in structured training.

Did my last triathlon of the year last Saturday.  Looking forward to starting my training program to get ready for the  Sarasota half marathon in March.

Also looking forward to some high volume training on the bike and in the pool.  That plus adding some more gym sessions back into my schedule.

I also plan on using the off season to lose some more weight; I find that hard to do during my race season.  I lost 18 pounds last year during the winter then maintained that over the summer.  I hope to lose at least another 15 this year.

I had fun basically finding 20 free each week where I used to train. I took a full 3 months off and it was great and I enjoyed it. Just getting back at it for about 5 weeks now. It's depressing to see how slow I am compared to last year in all sports. It'll come back I think. It's my long way if saying, take some time of to recharge, then pick early spring races to get you motivated to get back in it.
