Subject: good goggles?
good morning guys... i've finally taken the plunge and signed up for my first triathlon! so now i need to get some gear... primarily tri shorts and goggles. i currently have a cheap pair og speedo one piece ones, but they're not at all comfortable and fog up instantly. a friend recommended the barracuda brand. i plan to get my stuff on the trisports website, and they don't have barracuda brand... they have aqua sphere, lane4 and tyr... essentially i'd like a comfortable pair that doesn't sit right on the edge of my "eye bones". any advice? thanks so much in advance, and good luck to everyone in training and racing!

thanks birkierunner... as a followup... i will be doing all my practice in a pool, but obviously the races will be outdoors... should i get a smoke tint? amber? blue? i assume clear wouldn't be good for outdoors. or... should i get a pair for indoors and one for outdoors? thanks agian... i'm not a swimmer at all, so these are probably pretty elementary questions.

I went through two pair of goggles because they just wouldn't fit right, and they leaked. I finally found a pair of Barracuda goggles, and they work great. If you can find some, I would suggest it as they work great.

Good goggles are any goggles that don't leak or give you a headache.

I've never tried anti-fogging goggles, so I can't comment on those. For avoiding the inevitable fog, I use baby shampoo. A drop in each eyepiece, spread around with the finger, rinsed out a little in the water -- works great.

Most goggle boxes are not sealed, so don't be shy about opening them up and trying them out in the store. They should stay on your face without the straps around your head. Then you know they will seal around your eyes. If they seal well, they should also not leak. If they do, or you decide they're not comfortable, you can always take them back.

Welcome to the sport!

crap! my goggles just went 0 for 2. but if somebody were to try to poke me in the eye with a stick or something, they would probably perform awesome.

Get yourself two pairs that way you have a backup in case something happens to your original ones.

For the tint of the lenses, I have two pairs, one clear and one tinted, depending the the sun. No sun, or overcast, clear, sunny, tinted. I've trained in both, but I decide race day what pair I will use.

Of several brands and models I've used, I found I hate them all except Lane 4 (don't know the model). A lifeguard gave them to me to use when I forgot mine and told me to keep them at the end.

I'm still looking for the same model to keep purchasing the same ones. They fit right around the eye socket (not inside, which give me a headache and feel like my eyes are being put thru a vice).

I have a fairly narrow face and a high nose bridge. Most goggles either leak like they're not even there, or hurt my nose so bad... Well, I decided to try the mask. Dork factor -- high. Comfort factor -- much higher. They don't leak (as long as you keep your hair and cap edges out of the way), and as for fogging, well, that's all in how you prep them for the swim.
