Subject: Duct Tape - any negatives for blister protection?

I know blisters have been discussed a lot - I've searched. And I have tried almost everything except the duct tape.

I know I should just HTFU, but I would also like to possibly not be miserable from a blister for the last hour and a half of my race (and the last 2 miles are on trails so I know that will be quite painful)

So, after searching the forums and trying various remedies to no avail, I am ready to try duct tape over the adhesive knit for my next training run. I have searched the forums for "duct" and haven't seen any drawbacks to using it so I thought I would ask.

Thanks!

Blister details if interested....

  • first HIM in 10 days
  • blister is along the side of the ball of the foot.
  • Anything after 45 minutes running is painful
  • I think it may be a pinching issue - not rubbing
  • I know I probably need different shoes, but not going to happen before the race.
  • I've tried BodyGlide, Aquaphor, Blister Pads, Spenco Blister Kit, Adhesive knit, band aids

I have used duct tape for blister protection and it works awesome.  But I have only done it mountain climbing in boots.  As long as you get it to stay in place you should be fine.  Some duck tape work better then others.

From my days as a musician, Krazy glue over the whole blister and surrounding areas can surprisingly work well. Worth a try.

You can also try using moleskin and cut a donut hole in it slightly larger than the blister itself....cut the moleskin to fit the entire bottom of your forefoot region but then cut out a circle.  good luck

btw: the reason for this is it will remove the friction for the area so you can run pain free and friction free

Tegaderm also works well as a barrier!

I used to do long (competitive) road marches in the Army.  Out in White Sands, I got a blister on mile 8 and threw a patch of moleskin on and was able to finish the next 17 miles no problem.

Moleskin has always worked well for me.

I can't get duct tape to stick to my skin once it's damp, and it tends not to stay on once it's damp either.

Got to heal up the blister before you try other lube options; in the meanwhile, cover. What everyone else said ... moleskin, Tegaderm, even SuperGlue.

When it comes to long runs or races, stuff like BodyGlide and Aquaphor haven't worked for me at all. I use SportShield Roll-On.

I've used duct tape for hiking and running.  I just slap a piece directly on the skin where I want to minimize friction/rubbing and go.  (I've used pieces of duct tape over my nipples during long runs, especially in the winter, too.

The biggest problem with duct tape is that it's a vapor barrier. It's not permeable because of the adhesive. As a result, your skin tends to degrade under the tape. Once you put it on, you're married to it.

Here is a look at my feet from a 154 mile run in the sahara as they died under the tape:

I've had success with white athletic tape from the drug store. This material is breathable vs. duck tape which isn't.

Duck tape works well too. I cut out a small piece to cover the wound, and reverse that onto the larger piece so it doesn't stick to the blister or wound area. I have also stuck gauze on the duct tape, which works nice.

i can't speak to 154mi desert runs,

but duct tape has been a terrific solution for 26.2.

Duct tape has always done the trick for me. Apply over top of the blisters and it is like they are not there at all.

I used to use it all the time in races. The trick for me was to find the thinner duct tape. The really thick silver stuff wouldn't form to my foot and would come off mid swim. The thinner stuff worked much better.

I posted about this a few month back.  I could not get duct tape or moleskin to stay on.  It came off immediately. I went with a back up plan: Vasoline.  I set a small container right next to my shoes in transition and GLOBBED and whole bunch on the blister area before the run.  Felt kinda nasty at the start of the run but worked WONDERFULLY!!!

Super glue.  Seriously, pop the dang thing and fill it up with the Kray Kray stuff.  Voila, presto, shazam, blister be gone.

Duct tape is soft and flexible so it is good to put on top of rough areas to prevent blisters. It is also known for killing bacteria or warts if you put the tape on the spot for a couple weeks. If duct tape doesn't work for preventing blisters, any local store or pharmacy should have thin little adhesives that have a cushion on one side, and on the other side you stick the piece to the rough spot of the shoe.

I've used it with Wright Socks and got no blisters during my HIM last year. No problems. Just happy feet after the race.

I've used duct tape successfully in everything including climbing shoes (very tight!). I had a ball of the foot blister like that and ended up having to shave my foot, I have gross feet if you hadn't figured it out, and wrap all the way around the foot so it would stay on a wet foot. Make sure it's not picking your foot together or you could do some serious harm to your bones! The tape will stick to itself very well.

On the superglue front I've done that and it's great too. I've found that there isn't any coming back from that. Once it's on you're going to lose the whole blister when it comes off and just have an open sore. Just my experience, but had that happen on the approach at Mt. Shasta with one in our party and he was out of commission. Once it was an open sore there was no protecting it anymore.

The only thing I've found hat holds up during a race is superglue. If you have sensitive skin, throw down a layer of New Skin, then a couple coats of super glue, then some body glide or aquaphor.

I used it for blisters acquired a week or 2 before an inline skating marathon and it worked wonderfully.

Hi, I know it's pretty old thread but In my experience, any ducktape will do. But I would suggest to use appropriate protection for blister to prevent any problems or infections as advised by my doctor
