Pre-race routine:

Layout transition and fix things so they're not full of dirt by the time I get out of the water. Transition is in loose dirt and we had 20-30mph winds. Kind of a mess!
Event warmup:

Stretching and a little relaxation in the cool pond water.

Comments:

A bit faster than I expected on no swim base. Yeah!
I think I stayed pretty steady. My new anti-fog worked. double yeah! I even managed to turn it up a bit on the last 300 and drafted. Also did a good job keeping my legs relaxed so they weren't tight coming out of the pond.
What would you do differently?:

I'm torn about warm up. I usually swim better after the first 20 minutes. But on a windy day of 101 degrees, I was trying to conserve fluids and energy, so I didn't swim a warmup. I'll have to try it next time, because I swim faster after I get my rythm.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Wetsuit removal is still a bit tricky on the ankles. I've cause myself leg cramps by trying to go too fast, so I suck up the extra 15 seconds, and call it good.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't lose by 15 seconds, so T1 is good.

Comments:

Wooden legs coming out of transition! By the time I'd run accross the transition area, my HR was racing. I tried to rein in the run pace to let the HR settle, which helped through the middle of the run. The last mile was the most comfortable (also has the most downhill!) and the last half mile (flat) was downright fast (for me). Way slower that 12 months ago, but good for where I really am this year.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Post race
Warm down:

Chugged some gatorade & water. My mouth was crunchy dry from the wind!

Event comments:

Smaller venue races in cool places that are well run are great! This was perfect for my first race of the year. I'll be that much more comfortable on Sunday at the sprint!

Went out steady, but strong. Focused on trying to hold form. Navigation was beautiful - the bouy was in front of an island covered in dark vegetation. That day-glow orange was almost visible underwater!
Suit: super full
Course: Out and back times two. Having only one bouy was interesting. Some of the swimmers drifted across the center line. At one point there were swimmers all around me - going the other way!! Some of them were pretty far off line - but no headons!

Nice race and nice to meet you!!  Not bad for "no base" on the whole.  We'll be looking for you at the sprint and definately at the triple bypass
