Okay all you long distance runners, I need all the help I can get for the run portion of the double iron. The furthest I have ever run was 31 miles and that was on trails and with no swimming and biking before hand. Anyways, I'll be hitting the run sometime in the middle of the night; therefore, it will be dark. The race site mentions carrying a flashlight for the run. Do you think that is a good idea or would a headlamp work better. Any particular brands of flashlights/headlamps you prefer? I already have front/rear/helmet lights for the bike and they run on double A and triple A batteries.

Also, it's going to obviously be a LONG run for me, completely on asphalt. Should I think about buying shoes a half to full size bigger to switch to in case my feet swell? How would I break them in, since they will be too big ordinarily? What about blister control? I rarely get blisters on my feet anymore, even during marathons, but I'm sure it will be inevitable here.

What else should I be thinking about? Good resources on line to look at? I looked at ultrarunning.com, not seeing a whole lot about training, etc. there yet, but haven't had a whole lot of time to really go over the site. I will be starting a run/walk routine during my long runs since there is no way I can run the entire way and I think I got the nutrition thing pretty much hammered out (until it collapes and then it's on to Plan B, C, D...). Thanks for the help and suggestions!

You may find something over at CoolRunning under the Ultra section.

I have not ran more than 10 miles, so I am of no help.

All I can offer is that I would hate carrying a flashlight around with me.  I use a Petzl Zipka--very lightweight and reasonable brightness, especially if you are just on road surface the whole time.

No problem Gina.

Good luck on the PE next April.

I just took it this past April. Results will be in tomorrow or Saturday, so I am getting a little nervous.

I ume that you aren't coming over for RiverCities this year with your training for the Double.

I would think there has to be some kind of belt light, or a light you can attach to your shorts or something.

You also might want to check out what adventure racers do. Not for the training so much as for the nutrition. You're going to be going for a very long time, and you might find that "good" carbs, etc. are just not appealing and you'd rather down a few oreos. Adventure racing has some really good ideas for extreme long distance nutrition.

PS - Get a headlamp for sure!

Yeah, I've dabbled in longer runs with the some 'different' nutrtion, so like I said, not too worried about that...well, there is always the fear of stomach shut down, but I know all about oreos, m&m's and lemon cremes, pbj sandwiches, and chicken broth!

my advice may be carry an extra pair of socks.  If you socks get wet you are more likely to get blisters.  Changing out could help.  Just my $.02
