Do most of you wear your tri jerseys under your wet suit for the swim? I just got a wet suit and have done a few open water swims but haven't worn the jersey underneath. I assume this will help with T1 times and possibly help the wet suit slip off easier and not have to struggle to put the jersey on during T1?

It definitely helps with T1 time since you already have your jersey on.  Whether it will help with getting the wetsuit off?  Me personally, I don't think it does.

Definitely, always wear it during the swim. It's not needed during a training OWS because you're not racing a clock to get on the bike when you come out of the water.

It would be hard enough to put it on when you are wet (seriously, go jump in the shower real quick and try it... wet yourself down really well and then try to put on the tri top), but you wear it on the swim because you stand little chance at all of getting it on rapidly in T1 when you are not only wet, but winded, and your arms are a little fatigued from the swim and you're rushing to get onto your bike.

Yes, tri top under the wetsuit.

Definitely, learned this lesson the hard way. A 4 minute T1, most of it wrestling with my jersey!

x2!!  I tried not wearing my jersey under my wetsuit last month. Big mistake! Impossible to put on quickly when you're all wet.

What about a non-wetsuit legal race? Still just swim in the jersey?  I know this would save time in T1 but also seems like the pockets on the back would cause some drag.

Absolutely still wear it.

The pockets on a tri top are usually fairly well streamlined and will stick tight to the body when empty.  Any miniscule amount of drag created by them is FAR outweighed by the time saved in T1.

Of course, this is one reason to prefer something like the Orca Core tops over a 2XU top.... my Orca has a flap that covers the pocket so the water will flow right over it.  My 2XU has open pockets that seem to be perfectly placed on the sides to catch water as I roll, lol.  The 2XU top is fine for a wetsuit swim, but the Orca would be better in a non-wetsuit swim.

Thanks for answering my question, Chris.  I had a feeling the drag would be minimal and the time saved in transition would be much more important, but just wanted to ask to make sure.  Thanks again.

yes I wear mine while swimming. My first tri ever, I learned the hard way and didn't wear it. Wrestling in T1 trying to get it on was stupid.  I also learned after my second tri to skip the socks on the bike. Feet were so wet, almost impossible to get socks on easily. It does take a few races to start to figure out what to do and what to not do in transition.

My 4th tri I learned something from the previous tri where I watched a guy come in and instead of backing is bike into the rack, he put it in going forward and had his running shoes under the back wheel.  That saves time as  you don't have all your stuff spread out under your front wheel.  I'm not certain about the amount of time saved (maybe a few seconds) but in a sprint a few seconds can make a big difference.

Yup, always wear it during the swim with no issues. I don't wear one with pockets, so I'd wear it in a non-wetsuit swim as well. If you don't want to, I'd practice pulling the jersey from feet to shoulders rather than over your head. Easier to get on while wet.

I wear it under a wetsuit, but in non wetsuit races I DO NOT wear it in the water.  I don't like the way that it feels in the water by itself and I can pull it on by going over the legs (ie like a dress)in less than 5 seconds as opposed to wrestling over the top.

hmmm...I never thought of pulling it up over the feet.  Will have to test that method.Laughing

One caveat to not wearing the top in a non-wetsuit swim is the amount of drag it could prevent...

Not all triathletes wax their upper bodies.  Surprised

Probably TMI, but I bet I lose 10 seconds per hundred with all the hirsute ("hairsuit" as my kids call it) torso wet blanket effect.  Wink

I do not like swimming in my tri top either.  But I don't like putting on wet so I use a speedsuit.  I believe it is the fastest non-wetsuit option for anything other than a short sprint.

pops, I'm curious.... how much benefit is there with a speedsuit, and does anyone know if they are legal at all races?   I have a HIM coming up that more likely than not will not be wetsuit legal, but if a speedsuit is legal and will provide a benefit, I'm interested.

They are probably about mid way between a wet suit and a non wetsuit. In my case, 1:17/100 avg wetsuit, 1:20/100 avg speed suit, 1:24/100 with neither (based on half and full IM splits over last two years).

Some are legal, some are not. It is about the material they are made from. The WTC has a list of banned and approved suits on their site.

Cool, thanks!

ETA:  I couldn't find the WTC list, but here is the USAT List

If you figure 3 seconds per 100 that would be a savings of one minute.  To me that is a lot.  If you watch the Kona Ironman races, most folks will be wearing them.  They provide a few advantages.  In addition, to covering the tri top as mentioned, they are made of a very hydrodynamic material that has much less drag than human skin.  They also can give you a slightly more streamlined form as they are quit tight and hold my fat in close.

I bought a Blue Seventy ZP3 several years ago for Hawaii 70.3 and then had to buy a non-rubberized Xterra M when I went back several years later after the rules changed.  Some races have followed the WTC guidelines, some have not.  Both suits are pretty close in performance.

I find them much quicker to remove than a wetsuit.

Yeah, but I'm also that guy who needs to use the bathroom at least once or twice in anything longer than OLY, so a one piece speedsuit would cause me problems in the using the porta potty area

A speedsuit is only worn over a tri suit during the swim and is removed in T1 just like a wetsuit.  Also referred to as a swimskin.

A couple of choices... wear your tri top and let it slow you slightly knowing that putting it on wet sucks more. If you are in the US you are allowed to wear a swim skin over your kit. Lastly you can wear a one piece like a kiwami or zerod which is as fastas a textile swim skin but you wear it the whole race ( these are worn by the top ITU pros).

Swim skins are not allowed under ITU rules so they are by and large an American thing, not to mention the fact the WTC and USAT have different approval lists.
