thebigb - 2012-09-11 2:42 PM Going to say it again- Freeze them.  This also works on cycling shoes.

I will try.  But you are refilling my freezer if the odor melts the plastic bags.

Just think, now all your frozen meat will take like dead possum.  Yum!

I'm still working on the words to inform my wife that we need to put 5 pairs of horribly smelling shoes/boots into our freezer of food.  Geez, we'll be eating 'possum for weeks!

I find that napalm usually fixes this issue.

Wear merino wool socks, no more stench.

I recommend putting them in the washing machine. I take out the insoles so they can be washed, but seperately, and also the laces.  Since I have started washing my shoes regularly they last LONGER, no lie.

Bike shoes, on the other hand, are almost hopeless.  I do machine wash my insoles and put little sports balls-of-scent from Dick's in the shoes.  That's the best combo I have found.  I am sometimes tempted to throw them in the machine, but I am not sure which I would worry about more - the shoes or the machine, which I love so much.  Some day maybe I'll try the laundromat with an almost-finished pair.

I put bike shoes in top shelf of dishwasher (w/o dishes) with inserts out, facing the bottom, using dish washing detergent and set it for no drying. After they are done, I put newspapers inside to absorb water, then put them on boot drier.

I throw a couple of sneaker balls in each shoe, that seems to do the trick.

Update - After 36 hours in the freezer, my running shoes now smell like one dead possum dipped in vinegar.  Weird!

A little less than 36 hours ago, I was in my underwear in the backyard trying to chase a possum away with a stick so the dog wouldn't eat it.
