I like this. (I assume you were saying your your sig line is your mantra)

Yep.  I set a goal for each race.  For my last marathon it was 3:30 or bust.  For my HIM it was 6:15 or bust.  My overall goal with this is to eventually finish an ironman, possibly KQ, so now it's Iron Man or bust.

That's awesome... Did you by chance catch the name of my blog?  (it's in my sig line)  I might be a little biased towards liking your goal / sig line / mantra.

I have three that work for me, and its amazing how leading up to a race, you don't even think about these things. It's only under duress, that you find out exactly what works for you:

1. Dont stop.

2. Keep moving.

3. One...step....at....a.....time.

Nice to read all the input here. That's why I love this sport - it pushes you to places where you are not sure that you want to be, but you also have a need to go there -- a need to see how you react to "it".

Been injured for 6 months, with no-racing, and right now I am seriously yearning for that "zone"....

And I don't care how dark things might seem right now, but I will get back to that test.

Happy Racing!

In today's race, I caught myself telling myself repeatedly, "You can rest later."

Hot Runner - 2012-09-12 7:44 AM Some on purpose, some just fall into my head. I don't have any for swimming. My body just falls into a rhythm and pace if I let my head stay out of it. For the bike, I never used to, but on my (hilly) HIM I kept thinking "chug, chug" for the flats (because I'm so slow) and "I think I can..." for the hills. Maybe too many readings of The Little Engine That Could as a kid.  Running--random stuff that falls in my head. Historical favorites--the Battle Hymn of the Republic; the Marine's prayer, "At least you don't have VC shootin' at you!" (most memorable coach was an ex-Marine) and the old standby, "The faster you run, the sooner you're done." And in tri runs (or, in my marathoner days, the last 10K) I always tell myself, "You may feel bad, but everyone else feels worse." Probably not true, but it works.

I thought about this is my race today.

Used "Shut up legs" today.  Had cramps the entire race, but still hit my goal time.
