Subject: Shin splints and pain - Help!
Hi BT'ers.I am hoping someone can reassure me that what my leg is doing is normal. I had been feeling shin soreness for a couple of weeks, which is not unusual for me. It was not bad, so just kept training. Them one Sunday, did And 80km ride, with a run straight after. The first 3 km of run were totally fine, no soreness or pain. After that, I was running up an incline and my shin just seized as did the back of my lower leg across my Achilles. I kept running for another 1.5 km and it got worse and worse. Searing pain in my shin, and excruciating pressure across my Achilles. It felt like my lower leg was going to explode. For three days I could barely walk, then paid slowly subsided to deep aching. This was 3 weeks and 3 days ago.Since then I have had an X-ray and a bone scan which revealed no stress fracture, but quite extensiving tearing along both sides of my shin bone. Doc orders, no impact until I have had no pain for at least two weeks. So far, I am still getting a feel ache along my shin bone most of the day, when sitting and lying down mostly and constant pressure across my Achilles. It feel like it is swollen but it's not. How lo g will this take to heal and is this normal for this injury?I am missing out onPort Mac 70.3 because of this and I am pretty upset. When will I be able to try running again?Any advice or examples of your own would be greatly appreciated.Cass

That sucks for sure. Guessing how long it will take you to heal based on how long it took someone else to heal won't do you any good, and in fact may lead you to start training too hard too soon. Besides, knowing how long it will take to heal is only academic and will not speed up the process. It's okay to not know. Smile

My recommendation is to chill, do what you can and use the downtime to work out and fine tune the details of your post-recovery training plan.

I had some similar pains and I ended up having compartment syndrome in both legs.

Rolling on a baseball worked well for me after I found the right method.  Saw an ART doctor for it and that helped a lot but needed something to do at home too so I wouldnt have to drive.  It is something I have had come back a few times so I just pay attention to my body more now and get it handled before it becomes an issue.

Good luck and keep on keeping on

What your leg is doing is definitely normal HEALING.

Here's something to think about that's helped a lot of folks (including me, managed to train through two tibial stress fractures for marathons doing aquajogging for several weeks ... )

That's about normal. Just don't go out there and continue to run. If you still want good cardio, bicycling is the best cross training for shin splints I've found. I also found changing to minimalist shoes I couldn't feel the pain at all. But Shin Splints are the worst. Mine lasted for about a year and after a good sports massage and resting most of that year just bicycling, it finally subsided. Right now I am dealing with Achilles Tendonitis which is just as bad but I caught it early enough and I know how to heal it now.
