Subject: IM training rest day
My training plan has a rest day once a week on Monday's after the weekends larger volume workouts. Due to my work schedule it would work better to have the rest day before the larger volume days, on a Friday. Would this hinder my weekly progress by having a rest day between my intensity training and large volume work?

I'm probably doing the same training plan. I almost never take my rest day on a Monday because I'm addicted to my Monday morning run - it sets the tone for the rest of the week. Since my work/life schedule always varies, my rest day usually varies but I aim for Friday or Saturday. I haven't had any problems with it. I also have found that it works better for me to split up my long run and long ride rather than doing them back to back.

Training plans are a good guide but you're allowed to - and you should! - play with it to find out what works best for YOU.

Also, sometimes, if there's a day during the week where I feel like total crapballs, I'll move my planned workout to my rest day and take that day off instead. Flexibility is very important!

Last year my rest day was on Friday and this year it is on Thursday.  My long ride/run/swim is always on a Sat/Sun/Mon.  Ride and run sometimes flipped but always on the weekend.  Worked OK last year and seems to work OK this year.

I like my rest before my 3 days of long stuff and I need the day after the higher intensity to rest up.  This way I  go into the weekend a bit more refreshed.  I'd rather be rested for the long workouts as those are the most important at this time.

What also helps is Monday is always the long swim day so even though it is long, it is easier on my body.

good luck,

Duane

I prefer to to have my long rides/runs on tired legs for two reasons:  1) You will be running a marathon on tired legs. 2) Biking on tired legs makes racing on fresh legs feel soooo nice for a change!

I think the biking on tired legs is way less important than running on tired legs.

If you still do your long ride Saturday and long run Sunday, I doubt you are hindering anything IF you take those mondays relatively easy.  My legs are pretty fried on monday after a 9+ hours of weekend workouts.

IMO Friday or Monday are best rest days if you do two long workouts on weekend. Being off on Friday means you should be better rested for your long weekend.

For my first IM this past July I mostly used Fridays for rest days and Sat and Sun were big days. I would make Monday swim only and Tuesday pick it back up again. Seemed to work out okay for me!

I trained for two HIMs where Friday was my rest day (because I had the day off work) where Sat/Sun were my big days.  I thought this was a good idea, but in hindsight, it was a terrible idea.  My Monday workouts were absolute crap because I was wiped out from the prior weekend.

For my first IM, I switched my rest day to Monday.  It made a HUGE difference.  Sure, I was at work on Mondays, but the quality of my workouts during the week was much improved.  Plus, it made Monday something of a reward, instead of "ugh, Monday."

I also agree with training on tired legs.  It will teach you mental toughness and train your body to respond when its fatigued.

For my 2 HIM races I scheduled Monday as the rest day after big weekends. Worked out well for me and I plan on doing the same thing for my IM in 2013. I use Fitzgerald's plans and this is how he has them scheduled.
