Hey guys,

First of all I think it's awesome people even respond to these newbie posts, so thanks a lot.

Anyway about me, I'm 19 years old, I'm a regular runner, whilst I could never claim to be on the level of any casual triathlete, I wouldn't consider myself a couch potato.

I want to complete a full Ironman by the conclusion of next year for numerous reasons, but I wouldn't say they were any different to most people's so I won't bore you!

Edit: full Ironman is the goal, but I'm certain I'll need to build up through levels.

Of course I have no idea where to start, I usually just run to run, with little change to my lifestyle or diet, so I would be stoked if anyone could recommend some good books or sites. Or even if there's a way to get in contact with club that could help me!

Hope to see some responses!

Thanks a lot,

Pat.

Okay - firstly welcome - wow big target!

Where are you based?

Books to inspire - Macca's autobiography, Chrissie Wellington the same.  Training Don Finks Be Ironfit is the one I'm using for MElbourne March 2013.

You just gotta be disciplined - join a masters or a swim squad huge benefits.

Join a triathlon club - free coaching usually included in Oz.

Got a bike?

Yeah it definitely is a big target!

I own a bike, but it's not a serious road cycling bike, but it gets me around. It might be something I have to look into.

I was hoping to spend the next couple of weeks doing my own research, but I find that, especially with sports/fitness topics, there is a vast amount of material, so I figured this would be one of the better places to start.

I'm based in Melbourne, in the eastern suburbs, so if anyone knows of a good club in that area that would be super!

Hey fellow Melburnite!  I'm in Cheltenham but my tri club is in Mornington...go figure.  Swim squad in Sandringham....Google John Van Wisse if you wanna come along say hi!

Knox have a great tri club and so do Cardinia, and Bayside.  Let me know where you are.  Which IM you aiming for?

That's awesome jo,

I'm in Wheelers Hill, so most of those could work out!

Is it a faux pas to say I don't know what IM means?

iM means ironman. Ack to your first post, I wouldn't be bored at all in hearing your reasons. For many of us, this is a mid-life thing. Endurance sports certainly have all ages, but you will certain age groups much more heavily represented. I would love to hear about the interest of a 19 year old in ironman, especially as you're not a couch potato. I was not athletically active at your age, though I spent my summers as a camp counselor in the hills/mountains of central PA. Even the most athletically oriented of my friends would not likely have considered even a marathon, let alone ironman. I would love to hear about your motivations.

I think it's important to have something to strive towards.

I feel like it would be the kind of achievement I can think back on later in life, and the kind of training that is required would be a welcome release from law school's endless books.

I consider Ironmen, and any triathlete to be pretty much at the peak of cardivascular fitness, and that would be something I could take a lot of pride in.

I run between 3-4 times a week, usually around 5km, and whilst I used to be proud of that, I realized I had a long way to go, so it made sense for me to set my sights as high as I could.

Anyway, if a bunch of middle agers can do it, surely I have to at least try.

There was a kid at IM wisconsin who is also 19 years old and did his first IM on pretty much no training.  I'd bet you could too.

Big deal, if you chase me, I'll just run away. Oh wait...

There was a kid at IM wisconsin who is also 19 years old and did his first IM on pretty much no training.  I'd bet you could too.

That disheartens me greatly, I doubt I could take in all my shopping in one go, without intensive training.

But we'll see exactly how much medical assistance I need after a week or so at a triathlon club!

Why such a big goal to start with. You might want to try a sprint to make sure you enjoy the sport before spending all the money needed to train and complete an Ironman. Not say you could not do it but you have time An ironman is a big commitment that efforts all parts of your life. It is all most a like style

Ditto - we are just entering the tri season in Australia - check out the Xosize series and the Gatorade series - they offer sprint tri's November through to March.  Sandringham is an Olympic distance in late Feb I think.

Maybe sign up for a half ironman - Cairns hasn't opened yet - that's June 13 (I'll be doing that again)

Maybe try and volunteer for Melbourne Ironman - I did last year as part of MPTC - I was on the special needs bike station and got to hand Crowie the winner his special needs bag - highlight of my year!

anyway - good luck - wheelers Hill certainly central enough and easy enough to get down to the bay.

Half Moon Bay - Black Rock December, Wednesday nights 6.30 onwards.

Whilst volunteering at Melbourne an 18 year old came to special needs - helped him out - literally fed and watered him!  It was his first EVER triathlon!  Don't know if he finished but he said NEVER again at halfway through the ride!!!

Heh. My daughter did her first Ironman at age 18 with 0 training, but she did have a good base from being on a swim team the year before. She survived. Barely.

My wife is still mad at me for letting her do that, but it was exciting crossing the finish line with her.
