Pre-race routine:

Pre-race meal: Breakfast! Pancakes and egg whites. (What cant I eat breakfast for dinner every night!)
Meet my friend Nick in the parking garage. We get air in the tires and double checked our gear.
Event warmup:

Since this was my first triathlon I warmed up just like any other workout. Jumping jacks, air squats, high knees, and stretching. Has worked for me so far :)
Outside was a bit chilly so we head inside for the indoor pool swim and I continue warming up.
Swim
  • 15m
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

They didnt give us individual splits so I have to guess
What would you do differently?:

Start on the outside. Practice more swim so I can get comfortable in the water.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Athletes in the first wave who swam fast had to deal with some wet roads. So staff warned everyone to be careful.
Transition felt good, dry off, put on socks, helmet, cycle shoes, race belt, and I'm off. Nick's bike is gone! Either someone stole his bike or he's out on the course already.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This winter I'll practice on biking and running without socks.
Bike
  • 40m
  • 12 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to carry my speed in and out of turns. I was slowing down for every down hill turn.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

So, coming in to the end of the bike and to the dismount line his guy turns on his after burners. Completely blows through the dismount line. All the staff start yelling at him, then he realizes he was suppose to get and off trys to get off his bike but ends up crashing 10 meters in front of me. I dismount successfully without crashing and help him up then go rack my bike. Craziness!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Helmet off running shoes on.
Run
  • 28m
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really good coming off the bike into the run. I run at good pace.
What would you do differently?:

I could have run a little harder, but it was my first race so it was ok.
Post race
Warm down:

Nick and I jog around for a little and stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The time I had to train for this event.

Event comments:

Good race for beginners and college students. Exactly what it was meant for.

Course: Indoor pool swim in a 50 meter pool. 7 laps of a triangle course inside the pool. There were 3 heats fast and slow and slower, I was in the middle heat. Waves were started every 7 minutes. So I heard one of the most challenging things about a triathlon is the swim. Not because swim itself is difficult butt combine swim with 50 other people in a confined space! :( During the first lap I got kicked in the face, ribs, and someone grabbed my leg and pulled (how was that an accident. I've never heard of the grab and pull stroke!) Some how I was able to calm down (80% breaststroke) and finish in 14 minutes and some seconds.

Course: 4 loop course through University of Maryland's College Park campus. Nice challenging ride with some nice hills. I just got a bike like 2-3 weeks before the race so I wasnt looking to destroy the course. I only trained for 4 weeks so even if I wanted to destroy the course it was wise of me not to try. By the time I got out on the bike course it had dried out a little. Each lap was drier than the one before. No crashes for me :)
