Great ideas! I can't help but wonder if the raisins would, um, work through, on a long run?

I had the same issue - didn't want to eat gels and fake foods all the time. I swear by Kind bars. Dried fruits, nuts & honey. YUM! Lasting staying power through marathons (for me) and easy to carry on your belt. I found them originally at Starbucks, I was bonking hard during a run and knew there was a Starbucks about a mile away. I just hoped and hoped they had something, ANYTHING gluten/wheat free. I finally got there and found the Kind bars. I've used them running ever since (though buy them elsewhere to save money!).

I also carry a small packet with large Himalayan salt crystals. They have a full panel of electrolytes so I'll suck one of those every so often rather then drinking sports drink. Much easier on my stomach then sports drinks and easy to carry.

Reading about Scott Jurek in 'Born to Run' and different articles, he is bringing back the 'fanny' but I thought it was a good idea, put a bunch of pita breads filled with hummus or your favourite Nut butter. Delicious easy to consume fuel on the go!

Great topic.
Checked out the Feed Zone Cookbook on Amazon and saw the recipe for rice cakes.

How coarse are they? Where did you buy them?

I just posted about using real food during training: http://skorarunning.com/real-food-supplementation

There are a few studies mentioned as well some real food options as well. I'd love it if anyone would comment and share their own experiences

I just noticed the local Starbucks now has some type of raw bars. I've yet to try them, but they look really tasty!

Ha. I just did 2 marathons on real food only, carried my little ultra running pack. Last week didn't go so great, but it was hot and 100% humidity, so it was just hard to want to eat anything. And since I wouldn't drink sports drink on the course, it got difficult & miserable.

Did another this weekend and it went MUCH better!

I did a write up in my BT log yesterday, and in my wordpress as well.

I eat paleo, so I ate nitrate&sugar free pork sticks, a couple pieces of bacon (also clean), and baby food. Coconut water in my pack. Worked really well!

Cant remember where I found it but here is a recipe for Protein Bites:

1 Cup Old Fashion Oatmeal, Quick Oats work also

1 Cup Toasted Sweet Shredded Coconut

1/2 Cup Vegan Chocolate Chips

1/2 Cup Peanut Butter

1/2 Cup Ground Flaxseed meal

3 Tablespoons Hemp Protein powder and 3 Tablespoons of Chia seeds

1 Teaspoon Vanilla

1/3 cup Honey

Mix, form into bites ( use a tablespoon or small measuring cup as a mold). I leave them in the fridge until we need them, so far working out pretty good.

Long bike training rides scream for PB&J. No way will I eat gels on the bike when training. Actually, the tastiest thing is a peanut butter, honey, and banana sandwich. Two of those will fuel you good!

This thread reminds me distinctly of a buddy of mine chowing down on a loaded 6 inch sub from subway while we were on a run cooling down...

But me personally I'll take some Kashi bars (I like the blackberry fruit bars like the "nutri grain" style) with me on longer bikes and the occasional protein bar (I know you're not looking for bars). I don't typically have any GI issues with any kind of food on the bike.

I'm of the opinion that you should try to get most of your nutrition from real food rather than supplements. Just try a variety of things you like, pb&j or even a turkey sandwich would probably be fine. The only the I'd keep in mind is that the average person can only digest around 2-300 calories per hour during exercise so don't overeat and get an upset stomach.

Anybody have any GLUTEN free protein or energy portables for rides? I have made some homemade "Larabars" and they're great from freezer to car for breakfast, think I'm lacking a binding agent.....

I have also used some of the recipes from the FeedZone cookbook and am looking forward to the Portables version that I just ordered.

I thought I would pass this deal on to others interested.  If you order the Portables book through Skratch, they throw in a lb of their drink mix.  I like their drink mixes anyways so I just ordered through them.  that and they are supposed to ship sooner than Amazon.

Jerky? Could be hard to get down, but there's some protein...

Dates are also great. I like the gooey medjool ones but you have to de-pit them ahead of time.

I use a pork jerky (it's not as dry as beef) and baby food packets (sold with the baby food, just check they're pure baby food), date/peanut balls. Justin's makes little packets of almond butter, plain and with honey or chocolate. Oranges! Put orange slices in a zip lock. Great as it gets hot. I also semi-freeze coconut water in bottles.
