Virginia Beach, Virginia
United States
Virgina Beach Neptune Festival
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 18s
Overall Rank = 146/402
Age Group = 50-54F
Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

arrived around 5:30 for packet pickup; took my time getting transition set up, even decided to switch over to the other end of the rack, nearer to swim in and run out than to bike in and out; less crowded over there and could get the end spot.

put on wetsuit to my waist while in TA
Event warmup:

walked the 1/2 mile up the boardwalk to swim start
Swim
  • 21m 53s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

some tough surf to get through and then out to the turn buoy and swim along the beach. fairly large swells made sighting nearly impossible; only one buoy at the far end, but it was rarely visible due to swells blocking the view. once around the buoy and heading back in, got pounded by a large wave. very happy to be back on the beach

1/6 AG, 15/115 F, 115/402 OA
What would you do differently?:

I did pretty well considering the conditions; could have settled in sooner and could have gone at it a bit harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

1 AG, 4/115F, 36/402
What would you do differently?:

could have gotten out of my wetsuit a little faster
Bike
  • 45m 41s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.39 mile/hr
Comments:

the Garmin on my bike decided to randomly go into and out of auto-pause the whole time; couldn't get any useful info from it. I was wearing another on my wrist, but it was very hard to try to glance at it.

aerodrink straw was in a poor spot making it hard to drink

right aerobar was loose the whole ride.

passed 3 women, passed by one

1/6 AG, 22/115 F, 117/402 OA
What would you do differently?:

ride harder dammit!
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

left shoe came off the pedal during my moving dismount :( otherwise, a good transition

1 AG, 20/115 F, 98/402 OA
What would you do differently?:

2nd race where these new tri shoes came off the pedal; need new cleats maybe?
Run
  • 26m 42s
  • 3.05 miles
  • 08m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

ran it hard and made it hurt; probably went out too hard since I fell off the pace in the middle

1/6 AG, 33/115 F, 225/402 OA
What would you do differently?:

probably still had a little more to give
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

tough swim conditions; still not living up to what I think I'm capable of on the bike

Event comments:

well organized before and during the race, not so much after. we were told that this was the RD's first year doing the race. "major computer glitch" meant no result or awards after the race. awards to be mailed.

Congratulations on the AG win!

Sounds like a tough swim with those swells.  You rocked that!  Yo9ur bike split looks awesome! And that is one speedy run split too!
