Subject: Next road bike addition

Hey guys/gals,

I recently got my first road bike (used, but that's all my budget will allow at this point in time).  I have an indoor trainer, which I feel will be vital this winter as I live in the midwest.  I also am in the process of getting a computer that measures cadence, as well as the other essential functions.

My question to you all, is what should I go for next?  The bike still has the stock pedals with toe straps, so obviously shoes/pedals are in the conversation. Also thinking about aerobars, as I feel it would be more comfortable, especially when logging some decent time on the trainer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would put pedals and shoes first on the list.

Beyond that, unless you are planning to race in the next couple of months, I wouldn't worry about aerobars yet but wait until closer to when you are planning on racing (say three-four months out), especially if your budget is a concern.

I would put  clipless pedals and shoes at the top of the list.

My question to you all, is what should I go for next?

If you're on a tight budget, not sure the computer is absolutely essential, a standard watch works pretty well to gauge time in the saddle.

Of course, decent clipless pedals and high-quality comfortable shoes are pretty much the next thing for your road bike set up. But if you do get some funds, be on the lookout for a used mountain bike. In the Midwest, that can really expand the duration of the effective riding season. We're near chicago and I'm on my off-road bike a lot of the time.
