Subject: Who's dealt with metatarsal stress fractures?
Looking like the phat has to watch what he eats without running for a bit. Interested in folks who have had them and how long rehab etc. Read up on them a bit but wanted some anecdotal info. from locals. Thanks.

Oh it's been a long time, but I seem to recall about 6 weeks.  It hurt a lot too!  I think elliptical was ok, stationary bike ok, run or swim no go.

Eek, sorry to hear.

I had a 3rd metatarsal SF right where the foot flexes.

6 weeks in an air cast, then slowly added back running.  I mean, really slowly.  My doc was also a runner and dealt with this injury a lot.

The good news is that I could still bike (carefully but probably not recommended) and swim with a pull buoy (be careful not to push off a wall if you choose to do this).

It does SUCK and it HURTS but it was probably the easiest injury I've ever had, relative to soft tissue injuries that seem to never go away (achilles tendinities, anyone?)  Once it heals, it's healed and you're good to go.  No lingering crap like soft tissue injuries!

Hang in there.

Also, I did change my diet.  I LIVED on diet coke and coffee.  Not anymore.  I avoid foods that are acidic in the body and go for alkaline stuff instead.

Also, my vitamin D was low.  Might want to get that checked.

thanks for the pro tips all. i didnt realize until you mentioned it that the push off the wall was hurting. must be better with that and with mashing on the bike.

i take vit d supplements 1000mg for a few years but I do drink too much coffee and diet drinks. better to stick with the water.

xray revealed no fracture. they said MRI is costly 1500$ and wont change diagnosis. so back in 3 weeks for a follow up xray. offered me a steel insert for my shoe and told me to either not run at all or 10-14 days or run no more than 1-2 miles every other day. that sounds weird. hope its a quick fix, but timing isnt that poor really.

X-ray won't reveal fracture until after about 10 days.  But sometimes stress fractures or "stress injuries" are hard to detect.  When I had the fracture to my upper left femur in 2008 training for a marathon, it took a bone scan to finally confirm it.  5-6 weeks no running should clear it up, then start back GRADUAL.  And I mean low miles, soft surface, and slow stuff.
