Total Time = 1h 03m 4s
Overall Rank = 55/120
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/19
Pre-race routine:

This was an evening race, so I worked all day then headed to the lake. Arrived early and checked in. Had a Clif Bar on the way to the lake to keep my calories intact.
Event warmup:

I wanted to get a longer workout in, so I ran the 5K course as a warm up about an hour before the race. Then it was time to stretch, stretch, stretch before getting in the water. Was in the water about 10 minutes early to warm up my stroke.
Swim
  • 37m 29s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

Horrible swim for me. The scrum was more than I expected, and although I am usually ok with this, it kind of bothered me a bit. I never felt right or comfortable in the water, and found myself way off course in the middle of the lake on the long leg going east (on both loops). This definitely added meters to my swim distance that I did not need. I was not associating with my stroke and technique and was just not concentrating at all.
What would you do differently?:

Get my mind in the event, and concentrate on my pull and my sighting.
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Easy transition as no wetsuit was used. Managed to get up the ramp and into transition with my shoes on and out on the run in less than a minute. Fair enough.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

A good, consistent 5K run after a bad swim. Kept my pace well and managed to average under 8 min/mi. Had a warm-up run of 5K prior to the race and my race 5K was faster by almost 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than run faster if I can.
Post race
Warm down:

Relaxed and hung out with ONE teammates, then headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A very, very, very poor swim effort.

Event comments:

The splash n dash races are relatively small, but positioned well on the calendar and with the venue to be valuable for upcoming races. The swim channel given seems a bit narrow for a mass start, as the scrum was heavier than expected, but everyone has to deal with it, so no complaints.
