Oh God I don't even want to consider adding it up.  Somehow she (my lovely wife) will find this post if I do.  And you know what they say "What's posted on the interent today is used against you forever."

i think the general consensus for the married men of the forum is that they may know, but they don't want to say anything for the sake of maintaining a happy marriage.

for everyone else... lets move on to a different subject..

This year being my first and needing a lot of stuff I spent quite a bit but I sure don't want to know the exact Amount, I might just decide I have to give it up.

Spin Classes , swim classes, club fees , Splash & dash Fees, bike and bike gear, swim stuff 2 wetsuits a full & a sleevless plus all the aids( paddles, fins , pullbouy goggles 3 pair, mesh carry bags  2 and another Duffle) and other stuff. 3 trisuits one full suit and 2, 2 piece outfits, hoping to get another 2 piece now everything is on sale for half price.  I Just resigned and paid  for this years Spin and swim Classes for over the winter.

and on it goes.

I am fine with all the money I have spent the last year getting into Tri's. The only thing that has ever annoyed me (REALLY bugged me actually) is the fact that we had a hurricane come through like the day before or two days before or something and then didn't find out till the LAST minute (day of, 4-5 hours before the race) that the race was officially canceled. Then, only got 75% of our money back. Now being a little supersprint that equated to like 15 bucks I lost or something. But I was more twerked over how it was handled. When winds are still high, half the road is covered in sand, and the surf still rough you know it's not gonna be cleaned up in time for the race. Plus, your gonna ask people who's homes may have just gotten flooded to show up or forfeit their money. Just let people know so people like that me that may be driving an hour to rent a bike for the race can make plans accordingly. Then, to keep a portion of the money and say oh good thing we canceled in time to refund a portion of your money. mmmmmm, I was a little like wtf. It was a really insignificant amount of money in the long run and compared to what I have spent thus far so I let it go. And I trust that the race organizers are reputable people who were just trying to do everything they could to make it happen.

Is it pretty much standard practice that if a race has to be canceled due to bad weather that you won't get a full refund? I am guessing active or IMathlete charges them either way for the service?

I only ask because living in FL this is a possibility for pretty much every race around here during the season.

Luckily, my wife does most races with me (and is an AG'er to my MOP'er) to boot, so we're on the same page.  As soon as we start hesitating about the $$, we both agree that it is money well spent.

To the OP, in the last year, I would estimate:

$300 Wetsuits Xterra

$5,500 finally got new bikes

$2,000 entry fees and travel

$750 odds and ends, goggles, bike maintenance, bike shorts, tri tops,

Next few years should be "cheap", no major purchases in sight, just entry fees and travel mostly.

I honestly don't want to know. I've saved where I could -- recently stocked up on $8 clearance running shorts at Target, for example -- and spent where I thought it would make a difference.

The trick is to get your spouse into a more expensive hobby. My husband flips real estate, so although my triathlon hobby will make us zero money in the long run, he can't really argue with new $100 shoes when we just dropped a few grand on central air.... (and no, we don't have kids)

Maybe $3-4k is all over a few years.  Not a big deal.  Certainly worth every penny.

All of it it seems...  Then not much at all.  It depends on how you look at it.  I spent more than I thought I should on my bike/shoes/wetsuit/apparel.  Then I see things like handlebars for $1500.00 ONE wheel for $6000.00  Yes 6 grand for one wheel.  (Advertised in inside triathlon)  Crank sets for 2k etc.  So, I clearly haven't spent enough..

Is it bad when the LBS owner introduces you to the reps as his best customer?  With that said, just entry, travel, bike shipping, and hotel costs this year alone were close to $3K.

lol yeah I do not want to add it up. IM entry each year and other races I do come to just over 1k easy. Then add in gear and the number grows each year. However it is my hobby so the fun to money ratio for me is just fine.

That's difficult to even add up.

Ballbark since I started in07?  20k- 25k?  Scary that could be that much.  That may includes travel expenses as well, shoot Alcatraz alone was a $3000 weekend for race, 2 flights, rooms, food, bike shipping, etc.

In the last four years, I've spent about about $10k on bikes, wheels, etc.  About $2k on wetsuits for me, my wife and daughter.  Another $1,000 on clothes, etc.  $1,000 on gadgets.

Travel and races fees are the big bucks but I have to factor in that they double as vacation so would have spent most of it anyway.  We've done several destination races a year which include at least a weeks expense.  I'm guessing about $5k a trip.  Did a few extra weekend trips this year and they cost about $1k each.

Worth every penny.

A whole lot since 2009.  But worth every penny spent no matter how hard it sometime is.

When I think of all of the money I spent on cigarettes, fast food and doctors over the last 20 years being sick, tired, and overweight all of the time, I know triathlon expenses have paled in comparison.

Now, I have stuff to show for my money--great friends and training partners, great fitness, being an inspiration to my co-workers, an IM finisher's medal, and even an AG win last year with the invite to sign up for nationals.....(though I couldn't make it)

Triathlon has been good to me...

My answer not enough

My husband's answer to much

In the last four years I most likely have spent 10,000 if you add up everything that is involved with this sport ----   bike, shoes, clothes, nutrition, races, travel, Y membership to use the pool ect.

forget about hardware costs and race fees, flights, and such

how bout the pool membership?  it costs me 99 a month just for that.  at least you can recoup part of the loss from stuff by reselling them.  this money is gone baby gone.

and how can you count expenses for races?   are you going to train without ever racing? wheres the fun in that?

Considering the only real things I want to upgrade are my bike wheels and I need to buy a wetsuit still and I'm still under $2000 in equipment, I think I'm doing alright!

Hmm. In the last 3 years I've spent a lot on S/B/R, though initially I had no intention of doing tris - I first biked, then resumed running, and only later added a feeble approximation to swimming.

$5k on 2 bikes for me, $2k on bikes for my wife and daughter, probably $2k+ on other bike-related stuff (car carrier, trainer, storage, etc. etc. etc.).
$1.5k on swim stuff and pool memberships and a little coaching.
$2k+ on running shoes and other run gear.
A few $k on race fees, travel etc. (not so much on travel, actually)
A big chunk more on all new clothes for my 50lb leaner self.

I don't regret a bit of it. The effect of being healthier, lighter, sleeping better, less uptight, and enjoying racing in my mid-40s has no price tag. My wife sometimes worries about the time that it takes, as do I, but not the cost - she says that I never spent anything on myself before I got into this stuff.

I hope so as well! I find myself coming home and hiding new tri things from the significant other or running home to get the FedEx box off the porch first and then when he finally notices "where did you get that? where did that come from?" I may have a problem

I think I must have invested 5 to 6K for my first season of Tri's this year and it's been worth it. No hiding it from my wife either I'm sure she could probably tell you down to the penny what I've spent.
