Pre-race routine:

I had the day off from work but spent most of the time doing housework and packing as I was leaving for a short vacation the next morning.
Event warmup:

Did a little jogging and stretching. I put on my wetsuit and was about to warm-up when the pre race meeting started...oh well.
Swim
  • 08m 54s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time includes T1. The swim went very well. I started out in front and went out fairly quickly so that I would have room to swim. I swam surprisingly straight and had zero contact to the 1st buoy. My shoulders started getting tired from the full wetsuit and I faded a little coming back to shore.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, was very happy with the swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I don't have the T1 time but everything went smoothly
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

Since this is such a short race, I just went as hard as I could on the bike. Everything was going great and I was passing a lot of people early. For a while I was in no mans land and was a little disappointed I wasn't catching anyone but then one of the volunteers told me I was 6th so that explained it. About 2 miles from the end, I started getting really bad cramping in my back and stomach. It was so bad I could barely breath. The last mile is pretty much down hill so I sat up and tried to relax a bit but it didn't really help. I think quite a few people I passed made up some ground that last mile.
What would you do differently?:

More swim bikes as I think it was effort on the swim that caused the cramping in the back.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 time is included in the run but this went well.
Run
  • 21m 8s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 06m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I was really hurting when I started the run. My back was no longer a problem but my stomach was still cramped up and my both calves started cramping...ughh. Right away 3 guys passed me on the run. 1 guy took off like a rocket never to be seen again but the other two didn't really pull away that much. At this point I was just hoping to hold on to top 10. A little way into the run, I passed by Seth's house and he threatened me with a rubber snake :) For some strange reason that seemed to do the trick. At this point yet another guy passed me but now my calves were starting to loosen up. Slowly I picked up the pace and repassed 2 guys and tried to hang with the third. The stomach cramping never went away which made breathing difficult but my legs were now feeling really good . I couldn't catch the guy in front of me but I managed to hold off the guys behind me.
What would you do differently?:

I think the calf cramps were caused by pointing my toes down too much on the bike...this happens when I don't pay attention to my riding form. Otherwise I was actually pretty happy with the run considering the other factors.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just more training but I was very happy with the race

Event comments:

Though I know I can go a lot faster, I couldn't have not gone faster today so I am very a happy with the result. I am spending this season hammering the bike to see what effects it has on my run...today hurt but it was a good learning experience.

Wow...great race!

Sub 60 this season for sure!

It is amazing to read a RR when you are so fast all through the event fighting through some cramps and feeling off. Wait until you are spot on!

Snakes...that was cleared things a bit for you...nice of Seth to do that for you.

You are fast!

Good race and way to tough it up! last season I revised my bike fit to get my saddle a bit lower cuz I was pointing toes down when pedalling and I was working the calves harder resulting in always cramping through the run. I also adjusted my nutrition plan/sodium intake and for FL 70.3 with 95+ heat everything worked like a charm...

Congrats!
