Pre-race routine:

got up at 4:45 am, took a hot shower, did my tp massage ball routine, and watched tv until 5:10. Hit the road and drove to the race. Oh yeah- ate my normal pb&j bagel and drank gatorade.
Event warmup:

ran about 5 minutes on the trail, ate a clif bag,and just waited for the race to start late of course!! I woofed down a gel before the swim.
Swim
  • 08m 29s
  • 704 yards
  • 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

My shoulder was feeling very good, so I took it out pretty hard. In retrospect I probably went too hard, because I was more fatigued than usual when I got out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Not start out too fast. However, I did not want to get caught at the back of my waver either.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

This transition really sucked, what can I say. The racks were numbered, so my spot was in the sand, not on the pavement. It seemed like an eternity to get my freakin' wetsuit off. Next time I will use pam spray, not bodyglide on my lower legs.
What would you do differently?:

Bag the freakin wetsuit.
Bike
  • 41m 30s
  • 16 miles
  • 23.13 mile/hr
Comments:

I was a little worried here, because it took about 6 miles for me to get some serious speed going. Maybe it was the constant headwind, or the fact I went out a little too hard on the swim, but I was almost ready to just say screw it, and try to avg 20mph. Finally at mile 6 or 7, the gel I ate before the swim kicked in, and I started passing lots and lots of other racers. I finally settled in at 21 or 22+mph, and at points got up to 27 or 28mph. At one point some chippie passed me, then we played cat and mouse for about 10 miles. I knew I would have a good bike split now!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

T2, and I still suck. Had trouble getting my bike shoes off, and getting my running shoes on. I will blame the sand transition area on this one!
Run
  • 23m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt pretty good on the run, but I put a lot of pressure on myself to top a 7:25 mile from 2 weeks ago. I think I was running about 7:15's due to my estimate of where the water stop was 2mile??. Unfortunately, I started to fade with about 3/10's to go. I assumed the finish was where it was 2 years ago.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I started to lose some mental focus early on the bike leg do to my fatigue on the swim and poor transition. My buddy, Maxmattmick was not at this race, so MAYBE I didnt go 100% on the first part of the bike or the last 1/2 mile of the run. I also I put too much pressure on myself to top my run performance of a 7:25 mile!

Event comments:

Yes- I'm pissed at myself for not entering as a Clydesdale. Even though I'm barely over 200lbs. If I had, I would have placed 3rd, among some strong triathletes. However, I was very happy with my performance and overall placing among some freakin' good atheletes!

Course: I loved this run course! Trail run through the woods, completely shaded and hard pack dirt. It was slightly down hill, and I felt like I was haulin' ass. Unfortunately, there were no mile markers, and only one water stop. It was very difficult to judge my pace.

Great job, I recall having trouble in T1 at that park a couple years ago. Must be something in the sand there(haha). I was going to do this race until I went on the IR last month. You are right - this race brings out some mighty fast competition.  Your times are awesome. Congrats on an excellent race.

Awesome job - what an incredible bike split, too!  You're really putting up some awesome times this year.

Here's what doesn't make sense to me. The bike split.  According to the official split, I rode 16 miles in 41:30, at an avg of 21.7mph.  Now when I plug the time and distance into the calculator on this race report, I averaged 23.1mph!  Honestly, I don't think I went that fast.  Unfortunately, I did not stop my bike computer after the bike leg, so I'm not 100% sure how fast I went.  I do know that mike bike time and T2 combined was 42:56, which does add up according to the official splits.  And I do know in most cases, the mileage on these races is usually correct.  Anyway, who really gives a crap, as long as you put out 100% effort?

Another great race Bryan!  Your times are getting really solid across the board.  Not sure I'd want to race you this season.

Nice race, congratulations.

I also did this race this year. I agree that the sand was a real mess, made for tough transitions. Other than that I though the race was well run and overall a great first time race. I will agree that there were some fast racers here but it was great competition.
