Subject: little toe nail problems
I am having a problem with my toe nails on my little toes. Specifically, they are looking bruised. They don't hurt per se, but they feel like I might eventually lose them (the toe nails that is, not the toes). This has come on only in the past week, or less. The shoes have not changed. I have already run a 5k and a sprint triathlon in them. I put Yankz on them sunday, but the problem seemed to have started a few days before that. I have recently increased my mileage, so that might be it. The other culprit is that I walked 18 holes of golf in my shoes carrying my bag on Saturday. I have not done that in several months and usually use my golf shoes. Maybe that was it. I have also tried to pay attention to what socks I wear and make sure the seam is not on the tips of the toes.

Any suggestions are appreciated. :)

Cut them off!!!!! Seriously, it is probably the golf shoes. . . if it gets worse, then maybe a doctor? Or maybe swim and bike more for a little bit. . .

Sounds like you have what is commonly called, "black toenails". I lost the nails on both of my big toes the month after I ran a marathon.

There are a lot different theories to why people lose toenails...a common theory is that the box portion of your shoe is too small (your golf shoes?) and causes your toes to constantly bang the roof of the shoe, which leads to bruising.

Cut the nails back when you can...and if you can stomach the pain, rip them off when they start to flap.

Thanks for the responses. Its good to know that this not terribly abnormal (maybe I should say not abnormal for triathletes)

YO, TOM!
We need an ode to the Ugly Toe!!!!

Can I tell an "Ugly Toe" story?

Went camping with some friends....wearing the Teva's....tripped over the fire pit (I tend to do that quite a bit...trip, that is), tore off my big toenail.....

It was a crisis for more reasons than the fact it hurt like a mother....my best friends wedding was in a couple months...I was her maid of honor....and to wear....OPEN TOED SHOES!!!

By the time the wedding came around the toenail had completely come off and there was nothing there...what to do? When I got mypedicure they painted my toe bed instead...couldn't tell the difference....

But, yes, I lose toenails now and again...and the others are right...kiss those little piggy toenails goodbye and wear it like a badge of honor!

Hoody Hoo!

I don't know about an ode to the ugly toe... it doesn't have the innate grace and splendor peanut butter has...

I dated a girl who ran marathons - 3 missing toenails.  She did as you did, Nancy, and painted the skin - all the time.  At first it was a little off putting, but I quickly gave it as little thought as she did.  Now if only I could have trained her to leave the toilet seat up....

here's a paranoid question....one of my big toes was sore as hell for a couple of days. Now it has a distinct bruise under pretty much the entire nail....any chance I can save it? Or is it destined to become black and eventually fall off?

I'd be interested to hear other stories of how they dealt with that because, alas, when it's happened to me I usually break out the fire engine red toe nail polish and hide it for as long as I can until the inevitable happens.....
