Subject: Stomach bug 10 days before first 1/2 IM
To add to my anxiety for my first 1/2 IM in 10 days (b2b), I have just contracted a nasty stomach bug which is preventing my ability to do any training. I'm wondering if any others have had a similar experience and how you approached your final taper, and what if any impact this had on your event. Thanks for the feedback and support!

better than having a stomach bug 1 day before your first 1/2 IM.

If you've done the training, there's little that's gonna' happen over a couple of down days to get over an illness.  Just consider it all part of tapering.

I came down with a stomach bug during my first 70.3.  Strange symptoms on the bike I just couldn't quite figure out.  Willed myself to the finish and then spent the night in the bathroom with two kids who were also sick. Yell

Listen to your body.  It knows what it needs.  Your long runs/rides are done by now so rest and stay hydrated.  If you can get some stretching or light workouts in, great.  Otherwise, use the extra time to rest/sleep/rehearse your race plan in your head!

Hope you feel better soon!

The "hay is in the barn" at this point so don't worry about it.  Take it easy until you feel better and do NOT try to make up for the workout that you miss.   On the positive side, you will be racing at a few lbs lighter!!  If you can't do another workout till next week you will be fine.  Try to get in a couple of 5-6 mile runs and a few fast 1hr rides just to let your body know it is still expected to work.  See you in Wilmington.

One other piece of advice. Don't get back to normal training until you've been able to handle normal levels of eating for a few days. (Sometimes there's a lag between feeling well enough to train, and well enough to handle normal food intake--speaking from years of Third World experience!)

I made this mistake a few years ago after a nasty case of food poisoning, and it took me several months to gain back the five pounds I lost. Maybe this only happens if you're a skinny person who struggles to keep weight on and to others it sounds like a good problem, but in any case training underfueled is not a good idea, esp. with a race coming up!  If you start training too early, you'll get more worn out and vulnerable to other illnesses or injury.

I have the sinus thing going on and my hubby has the sinus and stomach thing. I didn't swim this morning because I can't hold my head down for that long without a raging headache and a box of tissues. Hope this passes soon and I don't get the stomach part of it! I wonder if they will stock the water stops with puffs!

Thanks all...that's the guidance I was looking for and the reassurance I needed. I feel like am on the up and up now, but frustrated I am off my gaining plan. Felt like I was making good progress there for a while and had a good routine going. Happy trails!
