I've had a trek 1500 for a year now and have had no problems at all with it (well, apart from when I crashed it and broke the handlebar - the rest of the bike was fine though).

When you are looking at the lifespan of a bike, you are looking more at the material that it is made out of rather than the decal on the downtube. Here's a decent link that talks a bit about the materials http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/html/101_framematerials.html

I got a Trek 2300 six years ago and have had no problems. In that time I've replaced one brake cable, three tubes and upgraded my tires.
