Total Time = 1h 59m 41s
Overall Rank = 869/1067
Age Group = 20-34M
Age Group Rank = 92/94
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30, ate cheerios, toast with jelly and drank half a gatorade. Drove to the site and set up my transition area and said hi to a few BTers
Event warmup:

Jogged about 10 minutes and then stretched and put on the wetsuit and went to the beach. I need to figure out a better wu plan and timing
Swim
  • 28m 20s
  • 880 yards
  • 03m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Absolutely horrible swim. Starting in the back I was able to freestyle about 100 yds and then went south with breathing problems and never catching breath. Switched to the slowest and most inefficient breast (or my version) and it was an incredible long 27 minutes in the water. Stopped briefly on one of the buoys and got ran over by the women elite, women second wave and then the older men's group at the end. If that's not demoralizing I am not sure what is. It felt like an hour out there and I'm not sure how I beat 33 people in the water, feel sorry for them too.
What would you do differently?:

learn to swim, play golf, or catch one of the jet skis
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

Okay transition. My plan worked. Since I'm half blind or 3/4 blind I got to the transition area and since it was by waves there was one person and one other bike in my rack area so now trouble finding my bike. Got the wetsuit stuck on the timing chip for a couple seconds
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really since a 1 minute decrease in time will not help me much
Bike
  • 59m 54s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 17.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Was okay with the bike and about my race average. The only problem was my idiot thinking and not realizing the race number on the tube would cause problems and I was constantly fighting and moving it. Got passed by a lot and did some passing.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more, but really don't have the time and also fix the number. Also learn how to start on the bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Okay with my time only problem was not making a turn to the exit so cost a second or two
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 28m 6s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Okay run except started to get a little warm and cramped in the hamstring in the end. A little slower than my Bolder Boulder butokay after the other two events and better than last week
What would you do differently?:

not much
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and grabbed some food

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my horrible swimming and not enough time on the bike

Event comments:

Don't think I will do any more open water swims

Mike, great race!  No worries on the OWS.....it gets better with time.  and I'm not making that up!  go to the Rez for a few weekends and practice in the roped off area!

Your race was great....congrats!

Good job on finishing even if the swim was a bit tough. And you were under 2 hours, which I thought was one of your goals. Nice work! Some of those other things like putting the bike number on right happen once and then never again. I did the same thing in a tri last year and was annoyed for the entire bike leg.

I think that sounds like a pretty good race   You're being too hard on yourself!  You did a great job and sorry I didn't get to talk to you a bit before or after the race.  I was on my way to find a minute of peace and quiet (which I needed before the pre-race jitters...) when I saw you.  Keep up the practice and you'll get there!  Nice job

Too bad about the swim!  Sometimes they start off bad and just keep getting worse!! - I know, I had a real shocker earlier this year and ended up having to hang onto a boat mooring bouy for a couple of minutes while I got my mental sh1t together.  As someone has a ready commented it does get easier each time.  (You just have to be masochist enough to put yourself out there againI guess.)  Well done anyway on completing the race.

Hey Mike, good race. Keep at the OWS. Others here can tell you I've been kind of worried about that as well, but you just keep practicing and it will get better (or so they say). Come on out to Chatfield and do some swims with us. It's great out there. very clear water and a nice sandbar about 340 yards from shore so you can stop, rest and then continue. It's open Sat mornings and Monday and Wed. evenings. You need to be a COMSA member, but that's easy and only $35. Look online to sign up.

Good job again.

Dan
