It's terribly sad. This is added to the awful accident suffered by Amy Gluck in Michigan earlier this year. Luckily Amy survived but remains hospitalized.

These things underscore the risks we face, and the need to be as careful as possible. Even then there are still tragedies like this.

Sympathies to this young lady's family and friends. Very sad.

This is very sad news. Seems like we are hearing about these incidents more and more these days. Be safe out there everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Same area and morning as Tour de Scottsdale.  Little bit later in the morning and it was a couple thousand cyclists riding through there.  Disgusting and sad.

Doh my bad.  I didn't pay attention to the article and thought it was about the cyclist here in AZ that was killed on Sunday out on Shea and Pallisades.

horrible.  I got caught in a downpour on my long ride sunday and almost got taken out by an 18 wheeler.  Vivions of Amy Gluck running thru my head I packed up and finished on the trainer.

I heard about this last night (she was a friend of a friend).  I find it particularly scary that it seems like there was no one technically at fault (for doing something wrong), but the accident still occurred

I have developed a pretty bad fear of riding on streets with cars parked on the shoulder....incidents like this only reaffirm that it's not an irrational fear.

Condolences to her family and friends.

that's tragic and sad for her family especially having so recently lost a family member.

I do all of my training on the trainer - due to an irrational fear of the road which turns out to be actually rational after all.  Road riding when the road is closed or in a park just to get handling skills under control.

This is becoming an all to often happening.  A couple of weeks ago, a triathlete was hit and killed in Jacksonville, Florida, on his last century ride before IMFL.  The driver was driving directly into the sun and did not see the triathlete. It's just very, very sad to continue to see this happen.

Just when I don't have thoughts of disaster while I'm riding on the road, I hear about someone else riding on the same roads in a horrible accident.  It seems kind of dumb to drive my car to a bike path to practice, but I might just start doing that anyway.

Yep, happening more and more. Recently in Cincinnati, an experienced cyclist was killed on a road that is frequently used by cyclists. Then, another guy was hit (though not killed) by a drunk driver in Covington, KY while riding home from the first guy's memorial ride and ghost bike dedication!! (500+ cyclists showed up for that, btw. It was beautiful.)

If we can't learn anything from this, then it's a darn shame. Someone posted that it's nobody's fault, I beg to differ.

I have never been in a situation that loosing control would hit a parked car. I have never driven so close to a cyclist that if they lost control I'd run over them. I know you don't all have the luxury that I do, but if you are doing 80 mile routes that take you through metro areas, then you need to maybe consider the benefits to adding an hour to your workouts by driving to a more suitable location and then biking from there.

Sad situation.

I read the article, and it seems like part of the problem is that this poor woman may have been squeezed between parked cars and the bus.

It's really difficult for a lot of people to properly gauge a rider's speed compared to their own; they think bicycles are going 10-12 mph and we're going 20+.   So we close on parked cars a lot sooner, and people don't move over to give us room.  And a bus can't move over all that far because it already fills the lane.

There are few good options in this case.  You can just stop and let traffic by or just ride in the lane itself all the time and never move to the right; it's "weaving' in and out of the shoulder around parked cars that surprises drivers.  I just try to avoid streets like this, but it's not always possible.

Do they have a three foot rule or similar there? Not saying three feet would have been enough, but it's enough that the bus would have to have been in another lane altogether as he passed her.

there is a 3 foot rule here in virginia, and cars pass me with a 3 foot clearing about half of the time.  having the rule doesn't mean it's observed, unfortunately.

No, the governor veto'd it.

I've ridden this route a lot.  There is a wide shoulder but there are often cars parked on it.  Sometimes there is a seam, or gap between the shoulder and the road, where the pavement has degraded.  What I "heard" was that she had to get around a set of parked cars and her tire got caught in the seam, and she fell into the traffic lane.  No idea if it is accurate,

Also seems to be in front of Cher's house.  A few weeks ago she tweeted how she hated "FKN" cyclists etc., a bit of a rant.  And it was noted in some threads that her house was known for always having lots of cars parked in front on the shoulder (workers, etc.)

Really?   If they do then I think a lot of drivers interpret it as try to pass a cyclist INSIDE of 3 feet.

It really is crazy/sad/incredibly dangerous/etc etc how close so many vehicles pass a rider even when there is no other traffic - all they have to do is slide over a few feet.  I just think there's too many drivers that think "I'll show that cyclist".  I really don't get it.

very sad news.... my sympathies go out to her family and friends. It re-affirms my aversion to cycling in the city. Almost 100 percent of my bike training is indoors. I would love to ride outside more often but don't have the nerve. I know I would improve more if I did ride outdoors however I found off road to be good fro developing handling skills and used to ride downhill which was also great for handling confidence and cornering.

Be safe
