Total Time = 7h 30m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/20
Pre-race routine:

Up early, ate usual bagel with some p-nut butter, banana and checklist all gear.
Event warmup:

Squats, arm swings for swim getting loose. Very little warm up - no warm up swim as it was cool air temps for start and not wetsuit legal. Didn't want to stand around wet.
Swim
  • 10m 25s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was great. Exiting water, stepped on sea urchin and got several "splinters" type things in foot. Did not hurt then, didn't realize they were in foot until after race. Proceeded rest of race fine.
What would you do differently?:

Vast improvement in swim techniques and breathing/settling down and making progress on swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Bike T1 was in a sandy area, Put shoes on first , then pushed bike to road, then got on bike and proceeded. Up to speed fine. Took in fluids almost immediately to get saltwater out of mouth/taste etc.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 40m
  • 12 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went well. First race with real bike/tri shoes and aero bars. Got in aero probably 33% of time. Got up to 25 MPH on one stretch. Felt good.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Took off helmet, slapped on visor/ rotate race belt/number and off I go after a quick swig of water. WEnt out fast out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Could have gone stronger last mile. Coasted in after I knew I was going to have a good time already. Could have finished stronger probably.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, leave it all on course, vs. coasting. Better pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Sports drink and banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

None.

Event comments:

Very well run race, location is great. protected open water swim in the bay side of the base- usually calmer waters. Only negative is the sea urchin population is high in that area. Get horizontal and swim as quick as possible on the swim start and swim in as far as you can on exit.
