Subject: Etiquette Question
Ok so here's the deal; I ran my 4th sprint Tri today and think I may have made a breach of etiquette, or so I'm told. I Had my best swim ever today beating last year by over 3 minutes, bike was stronger too by 7 minutes on a very hilly course that kicked my butt. I ran out of T2 and passed a few strong bikers that had passed me earlier. As the run wore on I passed and was passed by a few people One guy in particular I finally ran down and passed who was not in my age group. Another guy I tracked down and passed who was in my AG. With about .75 mile left I started to fade and was passed by both those last 2 guys. I was pissed at myself and pushed hard to stay with them, managed to stay within 20 feet but seemed to be losing ground. The last 100m I found my last bit of wind, closed hard and managed to pass both racers within the last 50 feet. The guy in my AG saw me out of the corner of his eye and sprinted with me but I got him by 2 steps at the finish. A few people in the finishers area took issue with this and thought I was showing poor form. My opinion is HEY, it's a freaking race! If I can catch you and pass I will do it. I wasn't hanging on anyone's tail waiting for the last push to finish. I passed as soon as I could. This wasn't for a podium or a qualifier for another race but I was pushing myself and leaving it all on the course. I'm a considerate racer (I think) and try to do it with as much competitive hunger as I can. I beat last year by 10 minutes, so I'm pretty happy. What are your thoughts?

My first tri is not until next month so I have nothing to base my opinion on except my own sense of fair play.  You did nothing wrong.  Different people have different strengths and weaknesses. If I am a strong closer and you are a fast starter am I to be penalized by some unwritten rule when over the full distance of the race I am faster than you because the difference in our times manifests itself at the very end of the rcae?

I say, sleep well tonight and great job on the improvement!

You did it perfectly!  You were able to dig deeper and deserved to pass them.  If they want to beat you they have to run faster.  Especially in a sprint!  10 minute gain, congratulations.

Those sprint finishes are just one of the reasons the sport of triathlon is so exciting.  As for the people having issues with it?  Every party has a pooper...:-)  Anyway, well done.  Be proud of that fantastic finish.

You didn't do anything wrong. The race doesn't end until you cross the finish line. Nicely done!

I ran a sprint last summer and got passed in the last two feet by a young marine.  (I'm sixty)  I only wish I had heard him coming so that I could maybe have given it a little extra.

I think that racing someone makes each competitor do better than they might have running by themselves.  Competition helps us achieve that which we would not have without it.

Good job.  And way to dig deep.

Great strong finish.  That's why they call it a race.

Last year in a sprint I was passed about 100 yds from the finish and missed 3rd place by 8 seconds.  Same race this year, I was passed at about 75 yards out.  I still had some gas in the tank and followed the guy until I knew I could sprint all out to the finish.  He was my age but not racing as a clydesdale.  I wasn't leaving anything to chance this year.  Ended up with a second in my division by about 3 mjns.

Race your race and finish as hard as you can.  The finish is not about picture taking or waving to the crowd.

Speaking as one who does like the picture taking and waving to the crowd, with a late finish, I still fault no one who runs in front of me at any time. I have no energy to hate that many people.

It is only bad form in the Ironman Finisher Chute.  You know, they announce your name.  It would suck to not give each person a couple of seconds to enjoy their moment.  And you don't want to finish with someone else's name being called.

And even there, if you have a KQ or podium on the line, you are going for it. The other guy can let you by if they want to take it all in. I still don't see it being that big of a deal at these. If you want the finish experience, you look around and time it better.

Nothing wrong with what the OP did.

Yes, it is poor etiquette to pass someone in a race.  You should always strive to finish last.

You would never see an experienced athlete at the professional level pull something like that, shame on you!

Laughing  As long as we all remember we are NOT experienced triathletes at the professional level.  I'm all for racing.....and like I said in my original response, the OP did nothing wrong if it happened like he said.  Still......I'm not diving for anything that I don't get paid for.  Common sense should prevail.....or not.

The only proper response would be to give those spectators a discount double check.

Rule of thumb, in my opinion, is if there is a finish line chute you hold your position. If you are a pro or someone looking to win their age group, sure blast away. A 30 year old blowing by a 50 year old at the tape looks cheesy. And yes, it's not about competition it's about etiquette.
